Quality Material in a Quality Book!

As a professional drum teacher with a current roster of 68 students per week, many of my students are very young. I've taught as young as two years old! I also have several special needs children on my roster. Andy's book is full of great things to do to keep the lessons light and fun without the little ones getting frustrated. It also serves to prepare them well for when they are ready to handle more mature material!

As an added bonus, the book is beautifully written and laid out and is made of durable materials. I was so pleased when I opened the envelope to find such a high quality book! Many of the drum books I've used over the years are tattered, dog-eared and coverless due to so much use and the books themselves not being made well.

If you're a parent looking to work with your child or a serious educator looking for curriculum for younger ones, look no further. Andy hit it out of the park with this one!

Perfect introduction for the junior drummer

Even though I have been teaching people how to play the drums for 20 years, I have struggled with finding appropriate teaching material for very young students. Drumset for Preschoolers promises to fill this gap in the market and I am pleased to say that it does so exceptionally well. There is detailed information for parents on how to choose and set up a drum set, interpret the color based notation system and play the interactive games described in the book. I have been using it with a 5 year old student for over a month - he really engages with the nursery rhymes and loves playing the 16th note fills around the kit! There is laughing, fun and the time just flies past. Both student and teacher are grateful.

Loving this book

I got this book for my two year old who has expressed interest in drumming and music but still doesn't have the attention span to sit through actual lessons. It has been easy enough for me, a musical illiterate, to follow and has lessons and games that my son enjoys while he picks up techniques that will help him later if he decides to stick with the drumming. Thanks, awesome book.

shed light on the tangled history of viking exploration.

I was amazed when I saw that the Gears' were publishing a non-fiction book about the history behind the books. The fan-site was thrilled. People of the Songtrail, which will be published in May, is the interaction between the Viking explorers and native people in North America. During the 900 -1200 AD little warming period of the Medieval period which increased mobility of sea travel. This resource shows the reader the actual written record of the travelers of the epic Sagas that gave rise to the legend of men like Eric the Red. Explaining the social dynamics and religious reasons for these far a field travels into the unknown. The book is the usual well researched and an understandable text which the Gears use to shed light on the tangled history of viking exploration.

A very short intro to People of the Song Trail.

It discusses "song trails" trails that lead to heaven beginning with the Norse and Celtic versions. They all believed that heaven could be reached and that earth could be a paradise if people lived properly. This book is written in a very personable way and not dry at all. This book is a very short preparation for the new series they are writing called People of the Song Trail. I am looking forward to reading the series.

Very seldom do we see such a thorough description of the Viking and Celt presence in America. This was an excellent and easy read. My only wish is that it were longer!

Good, considering too much AND too little information

If you are an IT professional with a good breadth of knowledge about the structure of enterprise data, systems and statistics, yet you are not sure what Data Warehousing, Data Mining or OLAP are, and are not even sure you know how to spell them, then this book is for you. (Rather limited audience if you ask me)
For the technically savvy, this book is excellent in covering, in minute detail, all of the possible needs, uses and commercial systems/products available to do Data Warehousing, Data Mining and/or OLAP. The tremendous amount of possibilities naturally causes this volume to lack the depth to actually guide a reader to an understanding of how they can implement these concepts. I do complement the author in possessing/researching such a tremendous amount of material. A downside is the fact that this book is instantly outdated because it is describing current technology (As of the writing of this book).
For non-technical Management and Executives however, this book will likely only confuse you to death and cause you to frown vehemently at the next person who recommends a Data Warehousing or OLAP strategy for your organization.
If you fit the profile that should read this book however, this is a great primer/eye opener to a rather large subject area called Enterprise Intelligence. Break out your reading glasses, (the print is small) set aside a good chunk of time, (the book is huge) and read it. Then find the suitable follow-up books that are in line with your new interests with Enterprise Intelligence. Keep a narrow focus when picking one of these. If you are a manager or executive, hire a team. This is a lot of stuff, and the need for this stuff is so painfully apparent that your business can not wait 4 years for you to learn this stuff.

Good breadth, little depth.

If new to the domain of Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing, this book will provide a better than average job of arming you with enough technical information to make you dangerous in your "new territory". However, if you're seeking more depth in any of the title's areas or are looking for something "less-technical" (e.g., more of a business justification), other books would serve as a better reference. Nonetheless, for its broad coverage, this book is a good addition to any BI/DW practitioner's technical library.

Great Book on Concepts and Motivations

I read this book a couple of years ago, then found it useful again recently when my work re-involves building data warehouses. This book has clear coverage on many topics in database and data warehouse. Authors often include descriptions of technologies as well as the motivation of using such technologies.
This is not a book that walks you step by step to implementations, but it is a book that will help you understand the technologies. Step by step guides are product specific, and extremely lacking in this area.

Fast, Easy, and Fun! It Works!

I found this book back in 1987 right before my first child turned 5. After reading the book, I decided I had better teach my son to read myself before the local public school had a chance to mess him up. I couldn't believe how fast he learned to read! Using this book made it simple, easy, and fun for him. We spent no more than 15 minutes a day going through the exercises in the book (my son was very hyperactive back then with a very short attention span!). After about 3 weeks Andrew was able to read simple children's books, and very soon progessed to higher-level reading. Once he learned HOW to read (thanks to Flesch's method), he was able to quickly progress on his own. Sometimes he wanted me to read to him; other times he wanted to read to me. I helped him whenever he got stuck on a word that was not spelled the way it sounds. Even though there are a lot of English words which are (unfortunately and annoyingly) spelled contrary to phonic rules, such as "eye," once you learn to read by phonics, the "sight words" aren't that hard to learn. Most of them are figured out by the context and are then quickly memorized. But FIRST, you need to learn the phonics!
Anyway, since my first son learned to read so fast and well, thanks to this book, naturally I turned to it again 5 years later when my second son was almost 5. However, it turned out that Collin had no interest in learning to read at that point. I felt no need to rush or pressure him, so I put the book away. A few months later I got the book out again to see if he was interested yet, and he was. Learning to read was fast and fun, just as with my first son.
For both of my boys, the first word they learned to read was CAT. At first, when they sounded out the letters for c-a-t, the sounds were separate, and it didn't sound like any word they knew. So I told them to say the sounds faster and blend them together. After a few attempts of this, "cat" came out of their mouths. I will never forget the looks of joy and amazement on their faces when that happened! They had just figured out HOW to read! That was the turning point, and reading as been easy and enjoyable for them ever since.
A couple of years later my husband said he thought we should start home schooling our boys. At first I didn't think I was up to the challenge until he reminded me that I had already taught the boys to read--and that's supposed to be the hard part. Once a person can read, learning is mostly a matter of self-education (with the parents as guides). He was right!
In summary, I love this book! It has helped my family greatly, and I believe that it would be very helpful for anyone wanting to teach a child to read.

When my son was seven he was two years behind in reading.

He had failed to learn the kindergarden and first grade words. I read "Why Johnny Can't read" with the fifteen minute primer in the back. I used it with my ADD Hyperactive son. My spelling improved. He was reading at grade level before he went to second grade. When he had just turned 13, was in seventh grade, he was tested and his reading level was freshman in college tenth month. That's 7 years ahead. The only book I used to teach him reading was "Why Johnny Can't Read". It is one of those books that is a must own.

Returning to this lifesaver book

I am the mother of a learning disabled son, who is now 36 years old. Along our journey during his school years, I sought help in a multitude of tutors and agencies. Of all the things that I did, I am very grateful to a tutor who helped him for three years, from the second to fourth grades, who used this book to teach him to read. I have always believed that he would not have ever read had it not been for that very wise tutor and THIS book! All of the exercises were reinforced and reinforced again at home with me and I saw the miracle of learning to read become a reality for my son. Now my little grandson is encountering some difficulty in the first grade and I am ordering this book for my daughter-in-law. The book is a lifesaver!

The way that the Sidemen wrote this book is exactly like how they collaborate in a Sidemen video, which is really funny, and that's why I'm such a big fan of them. I'm really impressed by the way they present their contents, using the 'Sidemen way'.

A new way to network

As someone who hates to "network," I found the advice in Click to be a godsend. Click completely changed the way I think about networking--instead of approaching someone with the mentality of "what can I get out of them," you learn to approach people with the mentality of "What can I give to them? How can I make this realtionship click?" As a result, networking goes from being a self-seeking exercise to a self-enhancing one. It's truly changed the way I think when I meet people for the first time--a must read.

Solid fundamentals

Fraser hits the high points: be nice to everyone; be positive; see the good in people and say it. His section on holding your tongue when provoked is excellent. He quotes Sartre to great effect: "Words are loaded pistols." And he has an interesting take on your network: if you are the smartest person in it, you are building it the wrong way. Good point.

Building upon the Golden Rule...

Click provides a common sense approach toward improving your relationships with clients, stakeholders, team members, folks in your network, as well as friends and family.

As the title suggests, the author provides ten "truths" for interacting and developing your relationships with others, and uses quotes and experiences from individuals as diverse as Gandhi and Reverend Wright to illustrate his points.

Initially, I thought this was a repackaging of the concept of the Golden Rule. It is, but it's much more than that. Click is a set of guidelines with helpful metaphors and truisms to help you relate more effectively and completely with others, and to feel good about doing it.

Several areas which made me think more deeply about interpersonal dynamics included:

- A section on pruning relationships that are not positive in an effective and nontoxic manner to focus renewed energy on more mutually beneficial relationships. While (hopefully) rare, these experiences can be unsettling, and the author's perspective was helpful to consider.

- Being open to everything and attached to nothing, which makes it easier to consider, appreciate, and support the contributions of others while strengthening the bonds of effective teams and connections.

- The concept of Trust First -- Distrust Must Be Earned, helps to set aside preconditioned notions to look at each new situation with a fresh and open perspective.

In my business endeavors, I'm building relationships with people who know that I represent a vendor and support its sales and delivery mission. Click has augmented my skills to help me more effectively explore approaches to interact with my connections in new ways for their benefit, which in turn I'm sure will come back to me in a positive way.

The message is genuine, helpful, and generates as many positive feelings in the practitioner as it does in the recipient. If you can get that from a book, it's worth it.

About the Author
Madi Carlson is the board president of Familybike, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting bicycling as a means for moving towards sustainable lifestyles and communities. She is the co-founder and ride leader of Critical Lass Seattle, an easy social ladies group-ride for new and experienced bicyclists, and Director of Seattle's Kidical Mass organization, a monthly ride for families. She has been profiled in the Associated Press, Outdoors NW magazine, CoolMom, and ParentMap. When not busy pedaling or encouraging others to pedal, she writes for Seattle Bike Blog as its Staff Family Cycling Expert and works with Seattle Neighborhood Greenways to advocate for safe and healthy streets. She lives with her family in Seattle, Washington.

An easy-to-read, comprehensive book on safely enjoying riding a bicycle in the city

Comprehensive, practical and easy-to-understand introduction to riding a bike in a city if you're interested in starting to ride a bike - or getting back to it. As it starts from all the basics, it may seemed to be aimed more at beginner cyclists - but even an experienced full-time cyclist like me finds many gems in there. The focus is definitely "Utility cycling", no tips on racing strategy, power meters or exotic frame material.

It covers in details the "Why", "Where", "How", and "Who" of bicycling around town (and also provides some details on bike touring and other related pursuits.) Lots of information in there! Quite comprehensive, the author covers the basics, from how to select a bike and gear, to urban riding techniques (in keeping with the League of American Bicycling curriculum, it seems), to legal issues and beyond, and also provides in-depth info on "family cycling" (a.k.a. "riding with children.")

The language is never condescending or too "bike-geeky". It's easy to understand when dealing with more technical aspects of biking, and the author always explains technical terms you might encounter - giving you confidence for your next visit to your local bike shop. This is a heavy tome, and packed with information, but it's still quite accessible: well laid-out and well-organized chapters and sections, lots of practical examples, and many supporting illustrations and black&white photos, that together make it an attractive book, a pleasant read, and a useful reference.

If you've read books like Robert Hurst's or attended one of the League of American Bicycling classes, a lot of the information will look familiar - urban cycling has been discussed (and argued...) in details since the 70s, at least, but Madi Carlson offers an updated look on riding a bike in the city, covering for instance how to deal with more recent infrastructure additions like "green paint", "bike boxes", "contra-flow lanes" - as well as covering all the good advice regarding how to smoothly mesh in with "regular" traffic. This is the type of knowledge that you can gain yourself over several painful seasons of riding - or simply in a few days, reading her explanations and following her tips.

And if you're a parent planning to, or already riding with children, Madi provides lots of excellent comprehensive tips, and encouragement., dedicating a whole in-depth chapter to this topic.

Did I mention "lots of info!" Chapters cover types of bikes, gear to use, description of the infrastructure, urban riding techniques, routing, dealing with harsh conditions, maintenance, alternative commutes, family biking, legal issues, and a couple pages of references to useful books and internet resources.

In conclusion, a well documented, easy to read, comprehensive book on safely enjoying riding a bicycle, in the city and beyond, that through its width of coverage, and solid knowledge, will interest "utility" riders of all ilk & levels.

Cycling culture can be a bit intimidating, so I really appreciated the way this book covered some of the more technical topics (like types of bike, bike parts/accessories, and bike maintenance) in a simple, concise way without being the least bit patronizing. It is entertaining enough to read cover to cover, and packed with so much useful information that I still find myself going back to it as a reference book.

WONDERFUL book. I'm a newbie to cycling in the city (used to a more rural area) and this was really helpful in understanding many of the unspoken/unwritten rules of the road. Also, she gives a good overview of general bike maintenance, and I was able to follow her instructions easily.
The writing is easy to follow, thoughtful, and humorous. Very well-written, and I recommend it for anyone even mildly interested in biking.
