Another whinging ex-member blaming everyone else
By Alan Frehley
With a shared surname, you'd think I'd be waving the flag for Ace on this one, but in short, this is one of the worst autobiographies I have read, even worse than Vince Neals effort, which takes some doing!
On the back of Simmons's book, this was a chance for Frehley to put his cards on the table. I always had Ace as a stand-up guy with morals and scruples. After reading this, I came to the conclusion he is no better than any other egotistical has-been that trades on past glories and fame.
The first third of the book is decent, we get to read of Aces gangs he ran with, and his initial foray with alcohol, but when we get to the Alive! chapter with KISS, the book nose-dives.
I don't begrudge him the money and lifestyle that he afforded himself, no issues whatsoever, but for a reader to be constantly reminded Ace is a `rock star with a lifestyle to live up to' is rubbing their nose in it a bit too much. He comes across as a worn-out has-been musician who is holding court with a trusty highball glass trying to impress the star-struck fans, conveniently forgetting to remind fans of cancelled shows due to poor ticket sales, although the ones he does play as a solo artist, according to him are always `sold-out'
I feel for his put-upon wife, Jeanette for having to put up with him now, how she must have felt reading this with the warts-and-all stories of casual sex. Whatever his daughter thought of him as a father has probably shattered any illusions she had.
Frehley conveniently skips over essential chapters of his life that the reader wanted to know about. We get next to nothing for Second Sighting/Trouble Walkin' era, and the reunion concert/tour is covered in less than a few pages, but in the meantime, we get page-after-page of stories like `I remember this one time, I was so full of drugs.....' or `I remember this one time, I was so high on alcohol.....' A damned shame virtually NOTHING said about the Creatures album and subsequent promotional tour knowing he didn't play a note on the album.
Whatever people think of Simmons & Stanley, they can probably sympathise with them now carrying passengers like Criss & Frehley. Gene & Paul are brutal in their running of the KISS brand, and have reaped the rewards as a result. Ex-members like Frehley, Criss and Cusano can bleat, whinge and whine to their hearts content, they really should look in the mirror and address their own shortcomings. It never fails to amaze me that ex-members write their autobiographies slagging Simmons & Stanley, but are happy to wear the make-up on the cover just to remind readers who they are/were, otherwise, who else would buy it?
In short, Ace is a washed-up has-been, and this book is his last hurrah. Lets hope so!

He just got lucky, like his father
By Gail A. Guinn
Egotistical, boastful, arrogant has been that had no consideration for his former fellow band mates. Try reading Paul and Gene's book and then read Ace's. He is thoroughly disgusting individual
