About the Author
Marc Landy is Professor of Political Science at Boston College and the winner of the 2009 Boston College Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Award, Phi Beta Kappa Omicron of Massachusetts. He graduated with a BA, Magna Cum Laude, from Oberlin College and has a PhD in Government from Harvard University. He teaches courses on American political development, the American presidency and American federalism, and he is the former chair of the Political Science Department at Boston College. He also serves as Faculty Chair of the Boston College Irish Institute, coordinating the academic component of its executive programs on various topics in American government, most of which are sponsored by the US State Department. He and Sidney M. Milkis co-wrote Presidential Greatness (2000 ). He is also the author of The Environmental Protection Agency from Nixon to Clinton: Asking the Wrong Questions (1994) and the editor of Creating Competitive Markets: The Politics of Regulatory Reform (2007) and Seeking the Center: Politics and Policymaking at the New Century (2001).

Sidney M. Milkis is the White Burkett Miller Professor in the Department of Politics and Director for Studies in Democracy and Governance at the Miller School of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. His books include The President and the Parties: The Transformation of the American Party System since the New Deal (1993); The Politics of Regulatory Change (1996), with Richard Harris; Political Parties and Constitutional Government: Remaking American Democracy (1999); Presidential Greatness (2000), with Marc Landy; The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2011, 6th edition (2011), with Michael Nelson; and, most recently, Theodore Roosevelt, the Progressive Party, and the Transformation of American Democracy (2009). He is the coeditor, with Jerome Mileur, of three volumes on twentieth-century political reform: Progressivism and the New Democracy (1999); The New Deal and the Triumph of Liberalism (2002); and The Great Society and the High Tide of Liberalism (2005). His articles have been published in Perspectives on Politics, Political Science Quarterly, The Journal of Policy History, Studies in American Political Development, and numerous edited volumes.

Good introduction, providing primary texts!

Henry Bettenson and Chris Maunder have done a great job of collecting some of the most important documents of the Christian religion from the beginning until today. Almost every major controversy in the universal Church is represented by a document or two. For instance, Arianism, Montanism, Sabellianism, etc, are all covered. Sometimes the writings of the heretics are thrown in for a more balanced perspective. As the authors move past the Reformation, the book becomes less useful. Since there are so many documents from various denominations, it becomes impossible to fit all of them in one small book. The Church of England is heavily represented, as are other religious movements in England. The documents of the Roman Catholic Church are represented, including documents of Trent and Vatican II. Luther's entire `95 Theses' are included. Some of the modern documents relate to issues of women's ordination, black theology, social justice, homosexuality, ecumenical relations, and AIDS. These are useful because they give documents from our own time.
Overall this is a good collection. However, for every document included, there were 20 more that could have been added. This is just the nature of the book. The editors did a great job of choosing relevant documents. So it's a good collection that will scratch the surface, acting as an introduction, but is by no means the only book someone studying Christian thought in-depth would need. However, the book provides original texts, which many people rarely get to read, so that is quite a treat. While the book is small, the print is tiny, so they manage to squeeze in a lot of material in 461 pages! As a collection of primary texts, this is one of the best introductions to the thought of the Church from its birth until today.

Wonderful for the Study of Western Christianity

There are several ways that one may study history. Firstly, one may read secondary sources: books about a particular period or event. Secondly, one may buy volumes of primary sources, using copious amounts of time to painstakingly go through each volume. Thirdly, one may read a one-volume collection of texts that are considered to represent the major trends in the historical period they represent. This book falls into the third category.
Documents of the Christian Church is wonderfully organized: thematically by historical period. Hence, one reads the early Christian apologists of the 2nd century and then immediately after that one reads of the theologies of martyrdom; one reads of the disputes over the incarnation of Christ before one reads about debates over tansubstantiation; one reads Vatican II documents before one reads liberation theologies. The writings of saints and heretics, Doctors and others, popes, councils and relevant non-Christian writers all appear between the covers of this book.
Of course, it ought to be noted that the excerpts are sometimes tremendously short - only a few lines or so. However, each reference is cited so that the curious reader who wants to go and read volumes of primary texts can do so; for those less inclined to do so, this book is an excellent first-hand introduction to the development/s of Christian thought.
However, the documents are largely confined to the Western church. The documentary history of the Eastern churches is largely absent for almost 1000 years: between 1054 (the Great Schism between the Eastern and the Western church) and the beginning of the ecumenical movement in the 20th century. So, if the reader wants to learn about the Palamite controversy or the Hesychast revival or the monastic influence of the Russian Orthodox monks, one will have to look elsewhere (although, I confess, I do not know where).
Nonetheless, this is an excellent compilation. The reader will learn plenty about recent theological developments, including various perspectives on sexuality, sex and gender, social work, feminist theology and liberation theology. How many of these more recent theological movements and trends will prove to be of long-lasting import remains to be seen, but since they are relevant now, it is important for the reader to be somewhat familiar with them.
All things considered, this is a wonderful collection.

If you want to know more about the history of the church, and you want to read the original documents, this is the book. This book will take you deeper into doctrine origination and debate throughout the history of the church. There are many typed of documents represented from Augustine to more modern documents on Jesuits. I appreciate the fact they do some limited notes for you to help you understand dates, but otherwise leave you to figure out for yourself what these documents mean, and if they are valid or not. It leaves it up to you, not someone telling you what they think. Good compilation & scholarship.

A Message from Lauren:
It's not common for an author to center all her novels around a single family, but by the time I began writing in the Regency period, I had fallen in love with the Chase family.
The Chases came to me all at once. For my first books, I wanted to write about people who were affected by their times, and 17th century England seemed like the perfect storm of political and social upheaval. So the Chase siblings were born: strong personalities forged through childhood experiences of war, exile, and tragedy.
After their 7-book series, I was ready for a new direction but I wasn't willing to leave the Chases behind! They felt as real to me as my own family. So I created a new generation of Chases in the elegant Regency era. I had a lot of fun tying these characters together across the centuries. Though over a hundred years had passed, traces of the original Chases are woven into the Regency novels, hidden in old portraits, hereditary traits, and family legend (the truth of which astute readers will know better than the Regency Chases do!).
My daughter and I are now writing Chase books set in the Renaissance era, so the tradition continues. Will I ever write about a different family? I can't say for sure, but I'm not ready to walk away from the Chases yet!

Fun and Witty Regency - 4-1/2*

Lady Juliana Chase, much to her brother Griffin's chagrin, seemed to have one goal in mind. That goal was to meddle into other people's lives rather than seeing to her own unmarried state. Due to several years of mourning, at the age of twenty-two this was Juliana's first season and her brother was dutifully looking over the crop of unattached males hoping to get Juliana married off. So far, none of his candidates were passing Juliana's inspection.

James Trevor, the Earl of Stafford was an old school chum of Griffin's and having lost both wife and child two years prior was not looking to fall in love, but as a favor to Griffin would meet and dance with his sister Juliana. Big, dark and handsome Juliana was not impressed but thought James to be perfect to save her best friend Amanda from an unacceptable forced betrothal. While Juliana began her campaign to tutor James in courting Amanda, James would play along with the delightful meddler as he began his campaign to tempt her into falling into his arms.

*** This was a lovely sweet and humorous regency tale with a delightful heroine, a most agreeable hero as well as being filled with a plethora of amusing and original secondary characters. It is sure to charm traditional Regency readers with all of the positively engaging characters from young Emily with her pet snake Herman, to Aunt Frances the spinster who finally finds love in the most unlikely candidate, and a number of equally admirable personalities gracing the pages. Lauren casts a charming story around two protagonists who couldn't be more perfect for one another if only Juliana could stop meddling into other peoples lives long enough to realize the prize she had right under her own nose. While short on suspense the more than adequate dialogs and the humorous machinations of Juliana's efforts to hook Amanda and James together while trying to keep the interest of a stuffy duke made for a vastly entertaining read. Lauren Royal has been a perennial favorite for years and continues to keep a loyal fan base with strong and worthy entries in this readers favorite loved Regency genre.

Silly and Unrealistic

I wanted to like this book, that's why I kept reading instead of giving up. My optimism was not justified, unfortunately. The writing was extremely amateurish. The characters act unrealistically, and their behavior just doesn't make sense. For example, how is it that an upper class regency era virgin finds it completely acceptable to engage in major heavy petting with a man that she not only supposedly is not attracted to, but this same man is also supposed to be courting her best friend - this, all in the name of "practice" for the man, since it's been "so long" since his wife died, he must have forgotten how to make out. Give me a break! *eyerolling* And this is just one example of the characters' actions throughout the book.

There is only so much time to read, spend your time wisely. There are some intelligently written, entertaining romances out there...unfortunately, this is not one of them.

Good book...

Our story begins in June, 1816, at the Foundling Hospital in London. At the age of twenty-two, Lady Juliana Chase is only now about to begin her first Season in London. She and her sister, Corinna, are late getting a Season due to all the recent deaths in the family. While touring the Foundling Hospital's art gallery with her sister and a little girl who lives next door, Emily, Juliana does what she does best ... meddles. Juliana has a big heart and always wants to help everybody and fix everything. So seeing all the babies Juliana decides she will sew all the baby clothes needed by the hospital for the month. Unable to sew well over a hundred baby items by herself, she must persuade others to help her accomplish this huge task. Juliana has also taken little Emily under her wing. Emily has a pet garden snake that she takes with her everywhere (and I do mean EVERYWHERE). Juliana wants the child to learn that reptiles over five feet in length as pets is not considered acceptable.

Shortly thereafter Juliana learns that her good friend, Lady Amanda Wolverston, is due to marry Lord Malmsey, a man too old for her, within two weeks. It was arranged by her father and Amanda cannot get out of it. So Juliana begins meddling, of course. Juliana and Amanda want to have a younger man compromise Amanda. They choose James Trevor, the Earl of Stafford, who is ready to wed and begin his nursery. Juliana feels badly that Lord Malmsey would be losing a bride, so she simply HAS to match him up with someone else too. For herself, Juliana chooses David Harcourt, the Duke of Castleton. However, Juliana soon finds herself much more attracted to James than David.

James is not only an earl, but also a physician dedicated to wiping Smallpox off the face of the earth. He runs New Hope Institute to tend to the poor and give the children free vaccinations. While Juliana is running around to get James and Amanda together, she learns James cannot seem to keep a receptionist. You guessed it, Juliana meddles. But now that her heart is on the line, Juliana is about to learn that there is such a thing as meddling too much.

**** I could not help but feel that the character of Juliana was a little overdone on the meddling front. And I wanted to see more of little Emily than the author allowed. Otherwise, this story is fantastic, IMHO. To keep the story rolling smoothly, the author has a sub-plot romance between Juliana's brother, Griffin, the Marquess of Cainewood, and another young lady. I look forward to seeing that romance continue in the next sister's story (due for release in Fall 2007). ****
