Not exactly what I expected.

I was hoping for a book that would help me exhibit my work, but this is for a more high level exhibit. I'm a very advanced amateur and want to exhibit my work at a local, small level. Some of it is relevant to my needs, but much of it is for professional photographers exhibiting at a very high level of professionalism, not for someone trying to put together a small exhibit at a local coffee shop.

Still, a very good book and worth reading.

Any photographer who expects to make at least a portion of a living from fine arts photography will have to exhibit his or her photographs. Setting up a website is not likely to do the trick, even with a lot of on-line marketing. Shirley Read's book covers every aspect of exhibiting photography.

The book starts out discussing the venues in which a photographer can exhibit, as well as alternative kinds of exhibitions. Read identifies the role of the curator and gallery owner. She discusses the planning process in great detail, and while this might seem like common sense, I'm certain almost anyone who has ever had a show will look back at things they didn't consider. Read covers these in detail, whether it is writing text for press releases, invitations and image captions or actually hanging the work. The book also includes case studies from other photographers. Alas, they are mostly stories of unexpected problems and disappointments. Despite the fact that the case studies are printed with white lettering on grey backgrounds, making the act of reading difficult, they shouldn't be skipped because they are rife with warnings.

Most of the advice is quite practical including my favorite, the instruction that, if you cut yourself on glass during the hanging, immediately step away from the work to avoid bleeding on it. This edition includes instructions on how to approach a gallery, and one which I wish I had read earlier in my exhibiting life, what to do during the private view (as it's called in England, instead of the American "opening"). Work the crowd! Avoid alcohol!

This is the second edition of this book and it contains a lot of information that wasn't in the first edition as well as updates resulting from the advances in digital photography. The book is dense and not a quick read, so one might be tempted to skim some parts. Don't. You might miss an important hint that will help you get the most from your exhibition.

ECT -- The most ethical alternative

I purchased and read this book because I believed that the employment of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) raises ethical issues - particularly for elderly. I received my clinical training at a time in which ECT was held in very low esteem.

Ottosson and Fink certainly changed my mind regarding the ethics of ECT. Currently, the acceptable protocol is the employ ECT only when all other interventions have failed. After reading ETHICS IN ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY, I think readers will be impressed with the citations and the clinical scenarios. After I completed the book, I came to the conclusion that ECT must be used sooner within the chain of intervention strategies. When Salzman's PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS FOR OLDER ADULTS was published, I read it and was applauded to learn about the damaging effects of psychiatric medications on nursing home residents. Research is slowly unfolding and is demonstrating that when compared to drug intervention, ECT has more positive outcomes and much less damaging effects on elderly patients.

As the research on ECT becomes more accepted, it will be used more frequently. As a consequence I fear that pharmaceutical companies will witness a sharp cut in their profits.

Pretty damn good for intro-level

I am about to teach an intro-level philosophy class for the first time to students who don't have much experience with the subject, and I will say that this book is fantastic for that purpose. The writing style is conversational yet intelligent and accessible but not condescending. It offers clear explanations of all the big names and theories in Western philosophy, with many ways to apply them to contemporary issues (though it touches on Eastern and feminist philosophy as well. I particularly like the Philosophy at the Movies tidbits, and the Historical Showcase sections. To make a potentially long review short, this book is excellent if you're teaching to a group of students with have little to no familiarity with the subject, offering a nice comprehensible panoramic view of the major ideas of Western philosophy. If you're teaching philosophy students beyond the intro level, it is not the book for your class.

This is a mandatory text for school so I don't know much about the content because I'm only reading it during class. From what I have read I kind of feel that everything is too general, but this is intro-level so that's what's expected.

I bought a used copy of this book and it was in a usable condition. Everything was intact with minor wear and tear. It has something that looks like water damage towards the end of the book but it doesn't interfere with its legibility.

Beautiful, just beautiful

WOW. Just WOW. I started this early this morning and read it in one sitting. I needed to finish it. My heart is in my stomach. My stomach is in my shoes. My nerves are shot. I’m a mess. At one point I had to put my kindle down and walk away to catch my breath. I was so upset. I live for angst filled books, and this definitely filled that requirement.

I have been in love with Brand for a while now. I wanted him to have a happily ever after. I really did. He was a sweet guy and he deserved it. But his heart was broken and he became hard and closed off. He thinks he’s no good to anyone. Everyone leaves him, so he feels unworthy. He lives with guilt, from a past that he can’t get away from. It’s always chasing him.

Nora is living with a controlling father and she is trying to break free. She keeps secrets that could cause more harm, if exposed. So she takes this on all by herself, even if it slowly takes pieces from her.

“People watching has always been a hobby. Watching other people’s lives distracts me from my own.”

An unexpected accident brings these two together and fate draws them closer.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d like Nora. She seemed a bit too forward to me. But after a while I realized she is just a girl who is going after something that will make her happy. And frankly, she desperately needs a bit of happy in her life. Her story was almost more than I could handle. My heart was in pieces over it.

“He made me feel safe in a world that is dangerous and ugly, a world that has only hurt me.”

I honestly don’t know how to put in words, what this book made me feel. Sadness, happiness, angst, overwhelming anger, heartbroken, disgust, content. By the end of this roller coaster ride, I was completely happy I climbed aboard. This is the fourth book in the Beautifully Broken series, but it can be read as a standalone. But you really should read them all. Courtney Cole is an amazing writer and believes in happily ever afters, so even if she drags you through the mud, you’ll get all cleaned up, by the end.

What can I say....this series just continues to get better and better as the books are published. �Until We Fly is the fourth book in Unbeautifully Broken series and it was just as great or even a little greater then the first book. �Courtney Cole's writing always amazes me. Her stories are captivating, engaging, and flawlessly told. �Her stories just suck me in and don't let go. �This book held on until the end....I actually read this book in less then a day. �I didn't want to put it down and it didn't seem like I could read fast enough. �This story had me smiling, laughing, swooning, panting, and at times utterly pissed and disgusted.( this is related to the tragedy that happened to Nora). � This is why I gave this book 5 stars....I love when a book makes feel every emotion I can feel and also makes me feel like I'm a part if the characters lives.

We met Brand in the other books in this series because he has been a life long friend of Gabe (Book 2) and Jacey (Book 3). He has always been a secondary character that I have truly been in love with. I was beyond excited to find out he was getting his own book in this series. I just knew his story was going to be great. My heart broke for Brand in Until We Fly, I didn't realize just how broken this man really was. His childhood was so sad and the way his parents were towards him would've broken even the strongest of men. I don't want to say too much about the story because it would spoil things for the reader. Brand was totally a swoon worthy hero!!!! He would do just about anything to protect what is his, he even has it tattooed on his body. I truly can't express how great Brand is, you really need to meet him yourself. I liked Nora as a character. What she had to endure in her past….holy moly I can't even fathom how someone gets over that. I was glad to see her character get stronger and start standing up for herself as the story went on.

As for secondary characters….this book really didn't have any that stood out for me. I was glad we got to see a little bit of Jacey again and a little of Gabe, but this book really did focus on Brand and Nora.

I am just going to end this review with…..READ THIS BOOK NOW!!!! Each of the books in this series can be read as a standalone, they are all different stories with a different couple that is the focus. There is only a little bit of character overlay. I would suggest reading the WHOLE series though, because book is FANTASTIC in it's own right!!!!

love this series and Courtney Cole has not disappointed

love this series and Courtney Cole has not disappointed. Each book in this series in unique and a different story front he last. I must say out of all the book, this one was very emotional and had me in tears in time. And then at one point I swear if I had socks on they would haver been knocked right off. This book kept me on my toes the entire time.

Brand Killien is home for a family emergency, while he is there, he can't help but be a stand up guy and help out in a different emergency situation. Helping others has landed Brand in the hospital and in need of his own nurse/helper. Since Brand is always the one who is helping others, it feels weird now that the shoe is on the other foot.

Nora Greene is the girl he saved when her life was in danger. Now that she has healed, she has made it her mission to take care of Brand. It doesn't hurt she had a crush on him when she was young. Nora has fully moved in and has decided to make sure Brand gets better.

The relationship that blooms between Nora and Brand is fantastic and electric! I You could feel it through the pages.

But like many other couples, Nora is hiding secrets. Secrets so big, it will leave yo shocked and maybe a little sick. It will blow your mind what she is dealing with. Even up until the end I could not believe it.

Courtney Cole has someone how managed to write a book that will keep you guessing until the very last chapter.

On a different note. I loved Brand in the other books and it is once to see him get the girl for once. He deserves happiness. Putting other's first has left him with little time for taking care of his own happiness. Now Brand can be happy!!

As good as it gets!

This book belongs in the pantheon of well written, well presented expertise. If you liked Bringhurst's gem of a book, add this one to your library. The organization, writing and examples are exemplary. Felici's sense of humor is a treat. His sense of fit a balm to the weary.

If you are type & text junkie this will soothe your jones. If you care about type this will make it clearer. Even if you are an oldster with plenty of practice this book will add something to your arsenal. At the very least you will find how to explain all that H&J arcania more clearly to others.

And, as a last thought, I appreciate the restraint in the design of the book. It serves the subject well.

Disappointing.

I bought the first edition of this book when it was first published in 2002. I have been reading Felici's articles on typesetting online and always appreciated their clarity and practicality. In the 10 years since the first publication, many technological changes have taken place, and I hoped that these would be taken into account in the 2011 edition. However, I was greatly disappointed. Still a lot of space is given to the discussion of typewriters vs. word processing vs. professional page layout software, or bitmap vs. antialias appearance of fonts on screen. The screen shots in the book date back to Mac OS 9, to a time before InDesign was even on the horizon. The section on print and web resolution issues doesn't take more recent developments into account at all--simply inexcusable for a book on type published in 2011. The glossary and index sections are far too generously spaced and unreasonably take up 80 pages, making them very impractical to use. Unfortunately the design and layout of this book is as stale as it was in 2002, and the poor paper quality is a big turnoff for a book that sells at nearly $35.
Half the content is as helpful and relevant as it was in the first edition, but the other half is dated and has become irrelevant. I don't see any need to buy the new edition.

Covers past history, letter architecture and future computer typesetting

I am only half way through this book (so much in it I have to take it a few pages at a time). The history of type is covered (and should be read to learn vocabulary...but has a great glossary if you just want to learn terms in other sections as you go along...21 pages of glossary.)

Seems like 1/4 of the book is history and the architecture of font AND typeface (yes...the book is so in depth it tells the difference between the two). The final 3/4 is on typesetting good and bad, how to do it with various computer programs (though no program is emphasized as each program will be good at one thing and bad at another and he wants to keep it as generic as possible so you can apply equally). It is written in a fairly straightforward language and you only have to scratch your head a couple of times (Plenty of Visual Examples are included). In fact, seeing how they do typesetting of this review is already causing some agrivation now that I know just a few things to look for. .

As I read in a magazine I use for graphic design...the best advice a graphical designer for what to have a great knowledge of is Typography. Even if your desing work is middle of the road your typography will give it a more cohessive look and feel and is probably the top number one thing to master...and I am beginning to agree. The book is set up to be used as either a reference guide or a textbook...your choice. I recomend this book as your first choice. Another book is "Logo, Font and Lettering Bible" by Cabaraga...if you are into designing, letters, logos and symbols.

Maria Orsic is Croatian-Roman Catholic

I had bought the paperback version of this book from [...] and had mixed feelings about this book.

First, I would have given a rating of two stars for the book because of the writing, organization of material, and not backing up any statements with valid sources making the information credible. I have given 3 stars due to the interesting subject matter and exploration of Maria Orsic and Nikola Tesla along with UFO technology developed in NAZI germany.

Why I don't like the book?

1) The author Maximillian Lafayette has a reputation of being a far better writer in his past books but I don't understand why he has changed with his writing in the publication of this book.

2) The author never backs up his statements with any credible sources but just gives hearsay statements. Does Maria Orsic exist or is it just a lie of her identity? Where are the birth certificates, school papers, and baptismal christening? Later he writes the bombing campaign of the allies destroyed all records about Maria Orsic which doesn't help the inquiring reader see the credibility of the existence of Maria Orsic.

3)The author writes his book using bullet lists compiling of sentences relaying information of the subject matter. Its as if he just have written his book using Microsoft Office 2010 word and sent it out to the printing press at lulu . And those were only his notes but not his finished final copy. He alos uses alot of photos almost making the book look more like a collage with writing notes.

4)The author has not provided accurate data of the subject matter regarding the religion/ethnicities of Maria Orsic.
Coming from a mixed Croat/Serb background, I can confirm her identity. Maria Orsic coming from Yugoslavia which consisted of 6 republics and 2 provinces had a Croatian father named Tomislav Orsic and an Austrian mother named Sabine. Maria Orsic WAS NOT GREEK ORTHODOX. Maria Orsic was ROMAN CATHOLIC. Croatians and austrians are Roman Catholic. And to confirm this information, in Northwest Croatia, the Orsic Castle was buildt by Count Krsto Orsic in 1756 located in Krapina-Zagorje county. You can find this information using the internet. Furthermore, Maria Orsic's father's name is Tomislav Orsic. Tomislav is a common name used among croatians celebrating their forefather King Tomislav who created the Croatian nation in 910-928 AD.

5) I congradulate the author for recognizing the ethnicity of Nikola Tesla being an ethnic Serb Orthodox Christian from the Lika-Krajina region of Croatia. Nikola Tesla's father was a Serbian orthodox priest named Milutin Tesla. However, the author mistakened his religion to be Greek orthodox when his religion WAS SERBIAN ORTHODOX. The liturgy was conducted in the serbian language and not the greek language.

What I liked about the book?

1) I liked the book because it raises more questions about the subject matter than gives answers for future researchers.

2) I also liked the book because it had interesting photographs of historical characters and events from the 1920s, WWII and beyond not seen. There were many interesting photos of Nikola Tesla's nephew Sava Kosanovich, Josef Stalin and German Nazi officers.

3)The book provides more information for future research of the subject matter and understanding the material. Maria Orsic is a mysterious woman and we will not know much about her.

Pure Poorly Written Fantasies

This book is poorly written and takes for granted unsubstantiated stories. The style is really poor and the author never ever backs up his sources with true historical proofs. To make it short: this NOT an historical book but a pure fantasy book. At least it could have been presented as such. Separating historical facts from fiction in tyhe field of Nazi esotericism and occultism has been dealt with in a more relevant way in the good book Nazi Secrets.

Hard to find tid-bits

Finding anything about Maria Orsic is like hunting for the fabled unicorn. She existed in early 20th century for a short while and then she and her ladies vanished with out a trace. She left behind a remarkable story, and to this day much of the information about her is still suppressed secret information that many governments wish to keep secret - including the US government.

This is a two volume companion set. Both in a printed format. Each sold separately.

This is esoteric information with a historical context and real person connected to it. Do not believe the garbage coming from the History Channel and the like regarding Maria Orsic. The only way you can find tid-bits of truth about this woman, her organization, followers, and the successes they achieved in secret under the very nose of deadly jealous Heinrich Himmler, is by becoming your own sleuth and investigator. There are two separate volumes to this set. Number two is much harder to find in printed form. Unfortunately, volume one promises conclusions to questions that will be found in Vol. 2, but are never answered there. Vol.2 seems to have lost focus. Which seems to be a De Lafayette hallmark. Vol. 1&2 are a must for any serious Maria Orsic researcher. It is part of a mysterious grand puzzle that you have to find the pieces for and then try to reassemble. This is a good start towards that goal but no means the finale.
