It's hard to find a good story that captures the cuckquean mindset, but this story did it! Not only is the writing flawless, the episodic format was perfect to show Nelly's transition from self-indulgent nympho to a selfless, humiliated afterthought. The story has a lot of really sexy scenes and, of course, the chastity belt is an interesting and fantastic addition to the plot. I feel for Nelly, but the equipment she picked out for herself made for one sizzling read!

Pyongyang, North Korea, 2011. In a city full of lies, one man seeks the truth.

In Kim Jong-Il’s North Korea, great things are expected of Han, a lonely guide to foreign tourists. To Ben and Hal, two world-weary Western journalists posing as tourists, Han’s obedience and austerity exemplifies all that is extreme in the totalitarian state. But Han is not all he appears to be; he has deep secrets that, if uncovered, would prove fatal to his life and taint the untouchable reputation of the Party. When Han falls in love with the enigmatic Mae, he is drawn further into danger, which forces to make a desperate decision: to unquestionably obey the Party for safety, or to risk everything for friendship, love, and freedom.

A wholly believable trip behind the Red Curtain of North Korea
By C. W. Dingboom
Taking place near the end of the Kim jun-Il era in North Korean, Comrade Han is a newly appointed officer of the DPRK's propaganda department tasked with guiding two western tourists and demonstrating the glory and excellence of the North Korean government. However, the westerners are hiding a secret: they're two accomplished journalists seeking to cap off a solid career of in-the-field reporting with an expos on North Korea's totalitarian grip on its citizens. But Han is hiding a secret as well: a hidden kernel of dissent toward the NK government and distrust of the "Dear Leader".

A little bit "1984" and a little bit Cold War spy novel, "The Limits of the World" does an amazing job of building the North Korean world that Han lives in. It is obvious that Drennan did a significant amount of research into North Korea and the myriad of secret, strange happening of the secretive government. But Drennan also does a wonderful job creating believable western journalists, cribbing the VICE magazine archetype to give us two gonzo style journalists trying to infiltrate and expose the DPRK from the inside.

Honestly, the book feels tailor-made for a movie option and I wouldn't be surprised to hear some company picking up the rights in the near future.

Love this book and going to get the third book!!
By Marcella
Rebekah Ford continues to keep the story moving in this second book of the Beyond the Eyes Trilogy. This book continues the story a few months after the first book ends but lets the reader know what Paige and Nathan had spent the time in between the books. They, along with Tree and Carrie, continue the quest to find the incantations to control Solomon's power originally in the ring.

Paige is even stronger after some training but continues to discover what Anwar failed to let her explore. There are new threats along with old threats in this book that keep the reader thinking, "What is Paige really? And how powerful will she become?"

The bond between Paige and Nathan are ruthlessly challenged throughout the book leaving the reader yo wonder if they're meant to be or should she be with Brayden.

I am so looking forward to reading the third book and finding out how everything ends.

By Dork Knight
Warren Ellis took over a rather (imho) lackluster book when he came onto Stormwatch and made it shine. What followed were some amazing tales which really laid the ground work for the now classic series, The Authority. Towards the end of Stormwatch, this one-shot was released which is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL if you're a fan of Stormwatch and The Authority. So what happens when one of the greatest writers working today sets out to tell a tale involving Stormwatch and the Wildcats tussling with one of the greatest creatures of twentieth century film? Absolute chaos and bloodshed ensue. This may seem like hyperbole since it's said so often in comics and other media but be warned because NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME. Great read, highly recommended.

THE FAMED CHRISTIAN AUTHOR TRIES TO “SHOW THE WAY HOME”
By Steven H Propp
Joni Eareckson Tada is, of course, a best-selling Christian author (e.g., Joni: An Unforgettable Story, A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain, and God's Sovereignty, A Christmas Longing, etc.) and an accomplished artist. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 215-page hardcover edition.]

She wrote in the first chapter of this 1995 book, “That’s what the following pages are. Guides and signposts to point you to heaven, the real home of our heart and spirit. I want to tap on your heart, open up a map, and show you the way home. The thoughts contained here are for those whose hearts break for heavenly joy, or at least would like to have their hearts break for heaven. It’s even for those who don’t have the faintest idea about heavenly joy but are haunted with curiosity.” (Pg. 15)

She states, “God designed both heaven and humans so that a cloud of mystery would prevent you and me from fully grasping heaven with language and logic. The apostle Paul, like Ezekiel and John, saw heaven with his own eyes; but unlike them, he was not only unable to describe the sights, he wasn’t permitted! The mystery is SUPPOSED to remain intact… We are only allowed to break through the glass darkly by faith. I’m thankful heaven is grander than human language.” (Pg. 25-26)

In a section labeled ‘New Bodies,’ she wrote, “One day, if I should die before Jesus returns, my soul will be reunited with my body… One day no more bulging middles or balding tops. No varicose veins or crow’s feet. No more cellulite or support hose… Just a quick leapfrog over the tombstone and it’s the body you’ve always dreamed of. Fit and trim, smooth and sleek… Little wonder ‘we eagerly await a Savior from [heaven], the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.’ (Phil 3:20-21) Our lowly bodies … will be like His glorious body. Astounding. Like Jesus in His resurrected body, we will have hands and arms, feel and legs. We won’t be spirit beings, floating around like angels who have no bodies.” (Pg. 34-35)

Later, she adds, “What about the second question, ‘With what kind of body will they come?’ True to the apostle Paul and his lessons from nature, all we have to do is open our eyes and look around. ‘You do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed… If there is a natural body, there is a spiritual body… And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man [Adam], so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven [Jesus].’ [1 Cor 15:38, 44, 49]” (Pg. 37-38) She adds, “I’m ready to have this lowly body transformed. That means I won’t merely be revived from the dead, like Lazarus when he came out of his tomb. People who return from the dead---whether from the tomb or off the operating table—aren’t, like Christ, able then to appear and disappear, walk through walls, or transport themselves through time and space with a single thought.” (Pg. 39)

She observes, “I still can hardly believe it. I, with shriveled, bent fingers, atrophied muscles, gnarled knees, and no feeling from the shoulders down, will one day have a new body, light, bright, and clothed in righteousness—powerful and dazzling. Can you imagine the hope this gives someone spinal cord-injured like me? Or someone who is cerebral palsied, brain-injured, or who has multiple sclerosis? Imagine the hope this gives someone who is manic depressive. No other religion, no other philosophy promises new bodies, hearts, and minds. Only in the Gospel of Christ do hurting people find such incredible hope.” (Pg. 53)

She states, “The universe fascinates me. If there’s a program about stars or space exploration on The Discovery Channel, I’m tuned in. Whenever the space shuttle is in orbit, you can find me fixated to the NASA video feed on cable television—I lie in bed and pray over the nations of the world as a little icon of the shuttle moves slowly across a map of the planet.” (Pg. 73) She adds, “I watched CNN when the Endeavor astronauts walked in space to make repairs on the Hubble space telescope… Then there were the call-in questions from viewers around the world. They fired question after question at the astronomers and scientists sitting behind the CNN desk… I began to lost interest in the program after one or two callers failed in their attempt to interject God into the discussion. The scientists sloughed them off. Experts would rather seek out Stephen Hawking or other theoretical physicists to enlighten them on dark and mysterious data… Forget that the heavens hold the home of their hearts’ longing. Stick to what is flat and factual, impersonal and rational… Yawn. I flicked off the television.” (Pg. 73-75)

She reveals, “I actually saw an angel once. It was 2:00 A.M. on a pitch-black night. I was wide awake, propped up in bed… my family … [was] surrounding the bed of my five-year-old niece, Kelly, who was dying of cancer. We knew her passing into heaven could happen at any moment… Suddenly, a brilliant golden shape that glowed whisked by the large bay window I was facing—it didn’t move from left to right, but from bottom to top. I screamed… In the next second, my sister Jay called down the steps, ‘Kelly’s gone!’ A few of the family came downstairs to find out why I had screamed. I told them exactly what I saw… We knew I had seen a large spiritual begin, probably sent from heaven to escort Kelly’s soul into eternity.” (Pg. 83-84)

She suggests, “Hell will not pollute the purified universe, nor will it be a festering boil in the side of the new heavens, an ugly sore spot that forever seeps and demands somebody’s attention. It may well be too small for that. I don’t mean hell will be smaller than heaven in terms of population statistics… But I wonder, will hell have greater numbers than the repentant residing in heaven?... Revelation 7:9 claims there is to be a multitude in heaven that no man can number… Rather than debate the census figures of heaven and hell, it is simply sufficient to say that hell exists; it’s horrible, you don’t want to go there, and you want to do everything in your power to keep others from choosing it… if heaven is better than we would dream, so hell will be worse than we can imagine.” (Pg. 164-165)

She admits, “The worst verse in the Bible is the one about dead people being judged. That’s because some of those dead will be my neighbor down the street, my elementary school teacher, the lady at the dry cleaners, or even those Muslim young men who work at the Shell gas station near my house (not to mention millions of others worldwide). When I pray, ‘Come quickly, Lord Jesus,’ I utter that word ‘quickly’ with caution. Do I really want Jesus to return soon? Yes! And no.” (Pg. 167) She acknowledges, “Although paralysis has aided me in my pilgrimage, it has not made me automatically holy. You could say the same about your own suffering. Pain and problems do not make one instantly obedient. For me, it has taken time. Time, in more ways than one.” (Pg. 177)

She concludes, “Years ago when I became paralyzed in a diving accident, my world was reduced to the basics… I had all the time in the world to ask questions of God. Perhaps friends who visited me thought I was being too philosophical. But they weren’t faced with the larger-than-life questions that were plaguing me: ‘What is the meaning to life?’ and ‘Where are we all headed?’ Haunted and hurting, I realized there had to be more to life than just existing. That’s when I came face-to-face with the God of the Bible. I decided it was better to throw my questions at Him rather than shrug my shoulders and turn away… [This book] is, in part, a result of that time of questioning. What is the meaning of life? To know and glorify God. Where are we all heading? To enjoy Him forever… at least for those who know Him. My heart’s longing is that you know and enjoy Him forever too…” (Pg. 209)

All of Joni’s books are “treasures” for Christian readers; and those with physical limitations will probably appreciate her heartfelt and thoughtful words even more.

RUSSELL’S FINAL SUMMATION OF HIS PHILOSOPHY OF KNOWLEDGE AND EPISTEMOLOGY
By Steven H Propp
Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872–1970) was an influential British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and political activist. In 1950, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of his many books such as A History of Western Philosophy, The Problems of Philosophy, Mysticism and Logic, Why I am Not a Christian, Religion and Science, The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, The Analysis of Mind, Our Knowledge of the External World, etc. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 525-page Touchstone paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Preface to this 1948 book, “The following pages are addressed not only or primarily to professional philosophers but to that much larger public which is interested in philosophical questions without being willing or able to devote more than a limited amount of time to considering them… I think it is unfortunate that during the last hundred and sixty years or so philosophy has come to be regarded almost as technical as mathematics. Logic, it must be admitted, is technical in the same way as mathematics is, but logic, I maintain, is not part of philosophy. Philosophy proper deals with matters of interest to the general educated public, and loses much of its value if only a few professionals can understand what it said. In this book I have sought to deal, as comprehensively as I am able, with a very large question: How comes it that human beings, whose contacts with the world are brief and personal and limited, are nevertheless able to know as much as they do now? Is the belief in our knowledge partly illusory? And, if not, what must we know otherwise than through the senses?”

He said in the Introduction, “there has been a mistaken tendency among philosophers to allow the description of the world to be influenced unduly by considerations derived from the nature of human knowledge. To scientific common sense (which I accept) it is plain that only an infinitesimal part of the universe is known, that there were countless ages during which there was no knowledge, and that there will probably be countless ages without knowledge in the future.” (Pg. xi) He adds, “if, then, I am ever to be able to infer events, I must accept principles of inference which lie outside deductive logic. All inferences from events to events demands some kind of interconnection between different occurrences. Such interconnection … is implied… in whatever limited validity may be assigned to induction by simple enumeration. But the traditional ways of formulating the kind of interconnection that must be postulated are in many ways defective, some being too stringent and some not sufficiently so. To discover the minimum principles required to justify scientific inferences is one of the main purposes of this book.” (Pg. xii-xiii)

He states, “it must be admitted that there is a bare possibility---no more---that although occurrences in the brain do not infringe the laws of physics, nevertheless their outcome is not what it would be if no psychological factors were involved… There is therefore, so far, not the smallest positive reason for supposing that there is anything about physical processes in the brain that involves different macroscopic laws from those of the physics of inanimate matter. Nevertheless, for those who are anxious to assert the power of mind over matter it is possible to find a loophole… since… according to quantum physics, there are no physical laws to determine which of several possible transitions a given atom will undergo, we may imagine that, in a brain, the choice between possible transitions is determined by a psychological cause called ‘volition.’ All this is POSSIBLE, but no more than possible; there is not the faintest positive reason for supposing that anything of the sort actually takes place.” (Pt. One, Ch. V, pg. 40-41)

He observes, “‘Knowledge’ is a vague concept for two reasons. First, because the meaning of a word is always more or less vague… and second, because all that we count as knowledge is in a greater or lesser degree uncertain, and there is no way of deciding how much uncertainty makes a belief unworthy to be called ‘knowledge,’ any more than mow much loss of hair makes a man bald.” (Pt. Two, Ch. V, pg. 98) He points out, “There is a long history of discussions as to what was mistakenly called ‘skepticism of the senses.’ Many appearances are deceptive. Things seen in a mirror may be thought to be ‘real.’ … The rainbow seems to touch the ground at some point, but if you go there you do not find it… But in all these cases the core of data is not illusory, but only the derived beliefs. My visual sensations, when I look in a mirror or see double, are exactly what I think they are… In dreams I have all the experiences that I seem to have; it is only things outside my mind that are not as I believe them to be while I am dreaming. There are in fact no illusions of the senses, but only mistakes in interpreting sensational data as signs of things other than themselves… there is no evidence that there are illusions of the senses.” (Pt. Three, Ch. I, Pg. 167)

He contends, “the best scientific opinion of the present time has a better chance of truth, or of approximate truth, than any differing hypothesis suggested by a layman. The case is analogous to that of firing at a target. If you are a bad shot you are not likely to hit the bull’s-eye, but you are nevertheless more likely to hit the bull’s-eye than to hit any other equal area. So the scientist’s hypothesis, though not likely to be quite right, is more likely to be right than any variant suggested by an unscientific person.” (Pt. Four, Ch. I, pg. 235) He asserts, “Perfect rationality consists not in believing what is true but in attaching to every proposition a degree of belief corresponding to its degree of credibility. In regard to empirical propositions, the degree of credibility changes when fresh evidence accrues. In mathematics, the rational man who is not a mathematician will believe what he is told. He will therefore change his beliefs when mathematicians discover errors in the work of their predecessors. The mathematician himself may be completely rational in spite of making a mistake, if the mistake is one which at the time is very difficult to detect. Whether we ought to aim at rationality is an ethical question.” (Pt. Five, Ch. VI, pg. 397-398)

He argues, “Belief in causation, whether valid nor not, is deeply embedded in language. Consider how Hume, despite his desire to be skeptical, allows himself, from the start, to use the word ‘impression.’ An ‘impression’ should be something that presses in on one, which is a purely causal conception. The difference between an ‘impression’ and an ‘idea’ should be that the former, but not the latter, have a proximate cause which is external… For my part, I should define an ‘impression,’ or a ‘sensation,’ as a mental occurrence of which the proximate cause is physical, while an ‘idea’ has a proximate cause which is mental… In dreams we think we have impressions, but when we wake we usually conclude that we were mistaken. It follows that there is no INTRINSIC character which inevitably distinguishes impressions from ideas.” (Pt. Six, Ch. V, pg. 455-456)

Russell was reportedly disappointed that professional philosophers (who were engrossed in Existentialism and Linguistic Philosophy, when this book was published) ignored this book; but with the advantage of hindsight, I think we can appreciate it as an excellent summing-up of Russell’s analytic philosophy (except that he gives “science” a much greater degree of confidence than we might, nowadays).

Environmental Microbiology, by Raina M. Maier, Ian L. Pepper, Charles P. Gerba

The field of environmental microbiology encompasses aspects of several areas of study including microbial ecology, molecular genetics, and environmental science. Environmental Microbiology is the first book to offer a comprehensive discussion of this field as a discipline, which the authors define as the study of microbial fate and activity in air, water, and soil, and the resulting impact on human health and welfare. While the roots of environmental microbiology can be traced to sanitary engineering (water and wastewater treatment), the field has grown to include other practical issues such as bioremediation, the control of known and emerging waterborne pathogens, microbial risk assessment, and environmental biotechnology. Five general areas are emphasized in this text: (i) Foundation chapters, (ii) microbial environments, (iii) detection of microbial activity, (iv) the impact of microbial activity on the environment in terms of nutrient cycling and pollutant fate, and (v) detection and control of pathogens in the environment. Designed for courses at senior undergraduate and graduate levels, Environmental Microbiology will also serve as an essential reference for environmental microbiologists, microbial ecologists, and environmental engineers, as well as those interested in epidemiology, water and wastewater treatment, and biotechnology.

Just mediocre.
By bmkd
I was anxious to receive this book, since it was praised as one of the best books available in the area of environmental microbiology. After reading through the pages, I just couldn't agree with this statement.
Here are some of the good points of this book: It's written in a fairly easy to understand language and provides a lot of pictures and graphs to illustrate important concepts.
Here are the bad points: It summarizes a lot and leaves out a lot of details and information. Whoever buys this book better know something about biochemistry and microbiology already. The graphs and pictures are sometimes ridiculous and of poor quality, almost like they were done at a home PC.
The book would be best for somebody who is a hobby environmentalist that wants to expand his/her knowledge, or undergraduate students of biology who want to explore the environmental aspect of microbiology out of curiosity. If you are serious about environmental microbiology and really want to get into it on a more professional level, I suggest the "Manual of Environmental Microbiology" 2nd edition, published by the American Society for Microbiology. It's a little more expensive, but worth every penny!

Perfect! Book was more than 'like new' condition! It looks perfectly unused. Very happy with my purchase.

Environmental Microbiology
By Valerie Anne Edwards
This is one of the most detailed, interesting, well illustrated books in microbiology that I have ever read. It gets right to the information that someone working in the environmental field needs, all in one place. No more digging around through multiple sources and hunting the internet for the latest information - its all here.
