Not My Tastes. Well Written, But I Hated It, Especially Bailey.
By Ann de Vries
I'm in the minority right now, but I hated this book. I have almost all of Alexandra Ivy's and Rebecca Zanetti's books, so I expected to love their stories. I wasn't familiar with Duvall's or Jayne's work, but I thought that since the book had two familiar authors' stories, it was worth trying. Unfortunately, it was not a happy purchase.
********POSSIBLE SPOILERS********
Ivy's story involved a Sentinal, Mika, and a healer, Bailey. They had been engaged, but Bailey got cold feet and bailed out. (I know, that was a cheap shot.) To continue, though, it is several years after the separation and they reconnect when Mika is on a case, tracking someone down. I hated Bailey. She walked out on Mika without a word, just packed up and moved home, because she wanted to see if he loved her enough to come after her. Talk about cruel and immature. Her excuses and apology were too little, too late in my opinion. However, this is a romance book, so Mika forgives her.
Bailey's immaturity continued to grate throughout the story. She hated routine and authority to the point where stubbornness overrode common sense. She reminded me of a small child sticking her tongue out at the adults frantically yelling at her to come away from the road as she continues to blithely back into traffic. Mentally, I had her saying things like "I don't have to, you can't make me, I'm not going to so there, I can do it myself", as she thrashes around on the floor having a temper tantrum. Did I mention that I hated her? Why do authors create heroines who are not only self-centred, but too stupid live? Anyway, the story line itself and the rest of the characterization were excellent. I would read more from this series, as long as it doesn't contain more Baileyesque heroines.
Zanetti's story had immediate closure, but an overarching story line that continues the series; at least I think it continues. The ending reminded me a bit of a Twilight Zone episode, where it is implied that more continues off-screen; it didn't feel complete, but it was an acceptable ending. The problem I had with this story was the huge amount of sex scenes---too long and too many. I found myself skimming through a lot of pages in order to return to the story. The story suffered for this, because there wasn't enough room left in the novella length to develop the story and characterization. What there was of the plot and characterization was great and I would have liked more details. I might try more books in this series, but I wouldn't purchase any more until I had a chance to read one for free to see if I liked it. (As an aside, I read Zanetti's other series free from Kindle Unlimited and loved the books. I bought all of them so I could have them to reread. They had borderline too much sex, but the stories were so well written that I decided that I could live with having to skip those scenes.)
Duvall's story also devoted too much space to sex and not enough to plot and characterization. Like Zanetti's story, it had a great concept but the balance between sex and story was uneven. The hero and heroine were very likeable and the concept was great. I liked what I saw of the Immortals and would like to see more of them. This story had immediate closure with an overarching story line, that engaged me and left me wanting more. I just wish there had been more story and less sex. In a longer work, the author can get away with a bit too much sex, but in a novella, there isn't room to have a lot of sex and still develop the story as well as it could be.
Jayne's story didn't seem to fit into the anthology. It was more lighthearted and was a clean read. If it were a mystery, I think it would be in the sub genre of cosy. I didn't mind that it wasn't a perfect fit, but I did mind that the romance was almost nonexistent. Nina, the vampire heroine, and Pike, the bird shapeshifter hero, were likeable but there was very little chemistry and no declaration of love until near the conclusion. As well, I wasn't entirely happy with the world building. Maybe this was because the novella length made it difficult for the author to depict her world, but for whatever reason, I couldn't see enough of it to form an opinion. Everything skimmed along the surface and didn't go deeply enough to let the reader in. I wouldn't go out of my way to read more of this series because it didn't engage me and I was a bit bored with it. The author writes well, and for those who like this style, it might be worth trying.
Conclusion: One story had an acceptable amount of sex, two had too much sex, and one was clean. One had an obnoxious heroine, three had likeable heroines and all four had likeable heros. None of the stories was as well developed as I would have liked, but none of them had cliffhangers. The stories had good writing mechanics, and other than my complaints above, were very well written.
I'm giving the book three stars, although it was a one star book for me. I just didn't enjoy it, but I can see its positive points. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who has reading tastes very similar to mine. Readers who are more into paranormal romances with a lot of sensuous sex scenes might like the first three stories. It's not erotica although it is explicit, which I like, but in smaller quantities. Anyone who only likes clean books will hate it, even though one story is clean.

Four new PNR authors for me to read! Snoopy dancing!
By Jacque
I do so love discovering new authors and I found On the Hunt the perfect mixed bag of authors and stories to tempt my pallet. From humorous to to heart-wrench, action to suspenseful it's the perfect combination to feel all my needs in one book. Four authors with introductions to the writing styles and worlds, what PNR reader could ask for more!
On The Hunt is my first book by Alexandra Ivy and I know it won't be the last. The quick introduction into the Sentinels series has certainly got my attention. I'm ready to explore more of this world but first, Mika and Bailey. This was a nice two-fer for me. Romance story + twisting, turning suspense = a great read that has me begging for more. Did I have any doubt they would end up together? Well, she is a free spirit and he's a duty above all else kind of guy. You just know that kind of clash will keep things interesting. There's even a few characters that caught my attention and I'm ready for more.
By far my favorite of the bunch, Scorpius Rising by my new favorite author, Rebecca Zanetti, was a thrilling read for me. The rehook-up of Nora and Deke was great, the sex was hot. A little afraid to make the same mistake twice they need to work on their issues. But in the middle of them trying to work things out is a growing plague, a deadly disease they are trying like crazy to stop. YOWZA! Now that's a story I can sink my teeth into. All those twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. Then...CLIFFHANGER! NOOOO!!! I calmed down knowing these four books are novellas to series to only find out Scorpius Rising is a pre-novella. WHAT?! And the next book isn't out until NEXT YEAR! No! No! No! I don't think I can wait that long to find out what happens next. Consider yourself warned.
There always has to be a sad, heart-wrenching story in a series and that is a very apt description of Phantom Embrace. Yuri and Cat's story is a very sweet one. She's a ghost and he's...not. I really enjoyed how it played out as friendship building into something more. As more as it can be with someone who isn't corporeal. My mind was guessing only one possible outcome for these star-crossed lovers, and even though it was sad, there is still a beautiful HEA.
Stake Out was plain out funny to me. A vampire fashion designer on the verge of her big show and all her models are popping up dead, then undead. Following along with her capers was very entertaining. The ending was a complete surprise. Consider me even more surprised when I checked out the author, Hannah Jayne, to find out this is actually part of a series. Really? It felt so much like a simple novella. I'm wondering if the rest of the series is as humorous. Definitely worth looking into.
I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

REVIEW:
ON THE HUNT by Alexandra Ivy revolves around a hot alpha Sentinel and a gentle healer, both polar opposites but you just feel their deep connection. The High Bloods encompass all kinds of paranormals but luckily it does not bog down the story but adds just enough to the exciting and sexy romance. Even if you haven’t read the Sentinel series, you will have no trouble following but will no doubt go out and buy the series.
SCORPIUS RISING by Rebecca Zanetti is a scorching hot romantic suspense story and I just love the medical thriller angle. The drama is fast paced and pulse-pumping edgy, then you add the hot sex to keep you flipping the pages. I can’t wait to read more of Nora and Deke’s story and how they combat this disease.
PHANTOM EMBRACE by Dianne Duvall not only revisits the Immortal Guardians and their ongoing battles but it revolves around an impossible romance. This story manages to pack it all into a heartbreakingly beautiful love story. If you haven’t yet read this series, you might have a small problem with the basic storyline but don’t let that deter you as this is more about the romance.
STAKE OUT by Hannah Jayne was a fun vampiric who-done-it. I enjoyed Nina’s snarky humor and comments during their search for the vampire with a mission. It may have been light on the romance but made up for it with the rollicking good story. This was a very fun read.
Overall, if you’re a fan of these authors, this is a good snack to hold you over until their next novel. If you haven’t read them yet then it’s a great introduction.
