In a country surrounded by South Africa and Mozambique; Africa’s last absolute monarch, Mkhonzeni M Dlamini grew up in the rural countryside of Swaziland at an impoverished village in outskirts of the southern town, Nhlangano. He narrates the sad realities of poverty and oppression in Swaziland as seen in his own life from birth up to university first degree .i.e. 1988 – 2014. His life is typical of the daily suffering of his fellow countrymen, added, his life is so inspirational, he shares how he fiercely and independently wrestled challenges throughout his way to his first degree.
Judged by the terrible predicaments that befell him and the state of poverty at his home, no one could have imagined how he emerged victorious; defying all situations deterring him from accomplishing his dream. His life experience are so baffling and intriguing on the life of the majority and ordinary people in Swaziland and gives an insight on how the feudal system badly impacts on the subjects’ daily lives.
Mkhonzeni is a young graduate engineer; he obtained his degree from the University of Swaziland in October 2014, graduating with a second class (second division) in electrical and electronic engineering. He is single and currently unemployed and lives with his parents outside Nhlangano. He is an active blogger, a liberal thinker and believes in a free and democratic Swaziland where political plurality is permissible.

Read about breaking the shackles of poverty in Swaziland from someone who has actually been poor

Are you tired of reading books, reports or articles by middle-aged, middle-class professors, authors, NGO-employees or journalists (like me) about how poverty-stricken Africans feel about or should react to their poverty?

Are you tired of seeing these Africans (who after all live in over 50 different countries and speak over 1000 languages) represented in a generalized way or in a way where we subconsciously (but falsely) come to believe the fact that they are silent, helpless victims that need our help and guidance?

Then you ought to read Mkhonzeni Dlamini's "Phoenix mysteries - memoirs of a born oppressed", about what it is like to grow up in abject poverty in Swaziland - and succeed against all odds.

Apart from giving a good general description of what it is like to grow up in a mud hut in the rural African countryside, with barely enough money to eat or to attend school, the book also describes the unique culture and political setting of Swaziland, Africa's last absolute monarchy - a "truth that is stranger than fiction", as Dlamini puts it.

Since literature from Swaziland is relatively scarce, especially literature that criticizes the government and challenges the status quo, and since those who do so are harassed by the police, Mkhonzeni Dlamini's book is particularly interesting.

Also because even though there are many statistics, reports and articles about Swaziland, understanding Swaziland (or any other country for that matter) also means understanding the individual Swazi and his or her mental set-up.

Buddhist Boot Camp is a simple collection of my one-page journal entries and personal letters to friends over the course of a few years.

Almost ten years ago, when I left the corporate world and moved to Hawaii, I started emailing my friends and family every a month to let them know what's going on in my life. About eight years later, my friend Kim suggested that I share those emails on a blog (simply because she found the letters inspirational, and she figured that other people would benefit from reading them as well), and that's how Buddhist Boot Camp was born!

As it turns out, Kim was right! Many people found the simple message in those emails refreshing, inspirational, and (even more importantly), motivational.

I say that motivation is more important because inspiration without action is just entertainment, and my invitation in the book is to go beyond thinking that something is a "good idea" to actually implementing it into our daily lives. It's not about Buddhism (so if you're looking for a scholarly study of its philosophy, this isn't the book for you). The invitation is to be Buddha-like or Christ-like, not to be labeled as "Buddhist" or "Christian".

Each story, inspirational quote and teaching offers mindfulness-enhancing techniques that anyone can relate to, reinforcing what we intuitively already know but have somehow forgotten. Buddhism is all about training the mind, and boot camp is an ideal training method for this generation's short attention span.

To make a long story short...

I sat there in front of the Tibetan Lama, wearing my maroon robes after years of studying Buddhism and said, "With all due respect, I don't believe the Buddha ever intended for his teachings to get THIS complicated!"

My teacher looked around at all the statues of deities with multiple arms and chuckled, "The Buddha didn't do this! The Tibetan culture did; this is their way. Why don't you try Zen? I think you'd like it!"

So I bowed-out of the temple, took off my robes, and moved into a Zen monastery far from home. Zen was simpler; that much was true (the walls were blank and I loved it), but the teachings were still filled with all the dogma that sent me running from religion in the first place.

There are many incredible books out there that cover all aspects of religion, philosophy, psychology and physics, but I was looking for something less "academic", so to speak. I was looking for something inspirational that people today would not only have the attention span to read all the way through, but actually understand and also implement in their daily lives. I pictured a simple guide to being happy, and in it just two words: "Be Grateful."

Gratitude has a way of turning what we have into enough, and that is the basic idea behind Buddhist Boot Camp. The short chapters convey everything I have learned over the years in a way that is easy to understand, without you needing to know anything about Buddhism ahead of time. In-fact, the book isn't about being a Buddhist at all; it's about being a Buddha!

Helpful and Inspirational

In my World Religion class at my high school we have learned about Buddhism and I was immediately drawn to it because it was all about looking within and finding peace and tranquility, I believe that this book demonstrates all of those characteristics that I love about Buddhism. As I am suffering from a personal dilemma lately I now more than ever look to this book for guidance about how I should view my life and this situation. This book tells us that we must follow thoughts of love and avoid those of fear, it also tells us to train our mind and not succumb to cravings, which this book calls "Uncontrollable Urges." One of my favorite sections of this book talk about how flowers continue to smell lovely even if we do not stop to smell them, and how the sun continues to shine even if we do not appreciate its beauty - so the book advises that we continue to spread love unconditionally and be kind even if those around us to not notice. Another important message that this book gave me was that "the opposite of what you know is also true" this means that we must accept other opinions and reasons for doing things because we do not understand other's circumstances and they might call for different plans of actions then ours do. I love the writing of this book because as other comments said it can be read in any order and it does not require endless sessions of reading, if someone simply wants to hear a few words of wisdom, inspiration or support they can look to this book, read a few of the two page chapters and be uplifted. This is perfect kind of religion book in my opinion, because instead of forcing certain ideals or telling the history it gives relatable advice that is both relevant to the religion of Buddhism as well as to simply having a good and caring life.

This book is my bible

I am not a religious person. Three years ago something happened in my life that was horrific for me personally. About the same time I was co teaching a World History class and we learned about Buddhism and it's philosophy. I did further research on this topic and it all made sense to me. Then in 2012 I found Buddhist Boot Camp on Facebook and Timber had no idea how he changed my life. Obviously I purchased his book and this has been my bible. When life gets me down and I am feeling sad/ anger, I turn to this book and reread it. A very short book thus easy reading. Once I practice AGAIN what Timber talks about, I feel better about myself and happier. I just purchased it for a very close person who is going thru some rough times. Hope she finds her inner peace like I found mine.

Since the late 60s when this phenomena was first observed in North American systems, intensive research has resulted in design and installation of stabilizing controls known as power system stabilizers (PSS). The design, location and tuning of PSS require special analytical tools. This book addresses these questions in a modal analysis framework, with transient simulation as a measure of controlled system performance. After discussing the nature of the oscillations, the design of the PSS is discussed extensively using modal analysis and frequency response. In the scenario of the restructured power system, the performance of power system damping controls must be insensitive to parameter uncertainties. Power system stabilizers, when well tuned, are shown to be robust using the techniques of modern control theory. The design of damping controls, which operate through electronic power system devices (FACTS), is also discussed. There are many worked examples throughout the text.
The Power System Toolbox� for use with MATLAB� is used to perform all of the analyses used in this book.
The text is based on the author's experience of over 40 years as an engineer in the power industry and as an educator.

"Essential for the Contemporary Reader"

To put it in a nut shell, this dictionary is an invaluable commodity acting as an authoritative and concise companion to aid the aspiring student and teacher to the forefront of psychology as we know it today. This dictionary is affordable, compact, easy to reference, and easy to carry. Some notable features include: new terms and up-dated research, the exclusion of pyschological jargon foriegn to the blossoming student, the many illustrations, graphs, diagrams, and formulae, ultimately complete this rewarding dictionary. Dr. Chaplin's work is highly commendable, and should be considered necessary for the shelves of all within the broad spectrum of the psychological world.

The only possible flaw in this book is that *a few* of the entries might be a little opaque to those who don't already know something about the given topic, but by far most of this book is extremely useful and understandable.
I bought this book as an undergraduate studying for the GRE in Psychology (and yes, I think it did help) and have continued to use it as a doctoral student. It's been helpful at all levels. I recommend it to undergrads who are just interested in psychology, to anyone wanting to brush up on any area of psychology, and to psychologists or psychologists-in-training who want a handy reference to look up new or unfamiliar terms. It contains clear illustrations -- for example, of the eye and of some optical illusions -- and includes a separate list of common statistical formulas, a list of Greek symbols found in psychology, and a list of abbreviations commonly found in psychology.
It has entries for everything from the most broad topics, e.g. "behaviorism", which gets a lengthy encyclopedic-like entry, to the most narrow, e.g. "phobophobia: fear of fearing", "bad trip", and "Barnum effect". It includes biographical entries. It includes many entries concerning statistial analyses used in psychology -- factor analysis, Latin square, rank order correlation, etc. Every aspect of psychology is included here -- the physiological, the psychoanalytic, the behavioral, you name it. All in a very small and concise package -- ordinary paperback size and probably less thick than the latest John Grisham novel.
Each entry leaves you with a good grasp of the basics of the term in question.
This is a good book for picking up and browsing if you're just trying to edify yourself, and it's a good book to have handy if you are surrounded by psychologists (or books) who occasionally hit you with a term you aren't quite sure of or would like to know more about.
Highly recommended.

Stop Loss vs Risk

The person who said that Kaufman does not believe in stop losses is quite INCORRECT. The whole purpose of this book is to weigh a stop loss against a possible incorrectly placed volatile sale.
If anyone trades with a regular basis they know the horror of being 'stopped out' because of volatile price swings. Kaufman helps by correclty analyzing the benefits of stops vs losses showing how mechanized systems for stops have their own pitfalls.
Kaufman's whole treatise on RISK is really worth the price of the book. Understanding risk and it's effect on your psychology is an important and very valuable treatise. Kaufman does a very good job on the subject. Also of benefit, is the Adaptive Moving Average algorithm. While this is also part of Metastock
having the formula is invaluable for those of us who want to modify it.
The weakest part is the computerized system analysis at the end is old and rather simplistic; I would not recommend it. Some of the ideas are interesting but Pardo's book is much much better.

OK but no cigar

I bought this book from Amazon in 1998 so I probably bought it on the basis of the only review at the time (which gave it 5 stars). It has remained idle on my shelf from the day it arrived until last week when I found reason to have a closer look into it. I was not particulary impressed. The book seems more dated than merely 10 years.

Another review mentions the " sections on "neural networks", "fuzzy logic", and "expert systems" are basically filler material and of not much practical use". I agree. I also believe that there is more filler material than that. There is, for example, a Fortran program proudly trotted out which allegedly creates a "shock-adjusted price series". I doubt that many readers would be interested in that. Also, inexplicably, the spreadsheet formulas are from Lotus and Quattro (none for Excel).

I got the impression that Perry wanted to write a book to impress others with his nerdiness, but when it came to really gritty detail (like what he might have found that actually provided an edge) either he was holding something back or he simply didn't know. All the formulas and technobabble in the world are to little avail if we ultimately cant find grip where the rubber hits the road. I haven't been able to find anything in the disjointed discussions on market noise and stoploss that I can actually apply to a practical end.

If the main value in the book is about risk management I think the material in any of Ralph Vince's books (from where Kaufman sources some of his best material) would be more insightful.

a superb read for new and experienced traders

successful trading system development requires a firm grasp of financial markets, statistics, and clever computer programming and Mr. Kaufman offers a little taste of each to his readers. The chapters on "market reality", "risk and return", "trend following" and "robustness testing" are well written and very helpful, while sections on "neural networks", "fuzzy logic", and "expert systems" are basically filler material and of not much practical use. All said, it is one of the better books on the subject.

Crystal clear

Im nearly half way through the book (it is a thin book) and all i can say is wow! Although most so far is nothing "new" to me to read, the book is so straight forward and almost like it's talking to me. I feel as though a parent is teaching me tough love and telling me straight up what i need to hear. It's easy to read and i love the examples/anaology it uses. Good read just when i needed that kick in the ass to wake up or keep going.

The book actually contains two ones. The first is "the Strangest Secret" (about 1/3 of the text) and the second is "How to Create Million Dollar Ideas" (about 2/3 of the text).

The first book contains simple but priceless teaching that you must have goal. If you do not know what you want, you will get it. That is absolutely nothing. If you know what you want and work towards it, it is success already.

The second book opens to you world of creative thinking, that can help you in creating prosperity. Nice addon to the first book.
