About the Author

Dolores Cannon, a regressive hypnotherapist and psychic researcher who records "Lost" knowledge, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1931. I read Jesus and the Essenes prior to this.

Reading these two books really made me realize that Jesus really wanted to have all of us work toward our own enlightenment and transend our physicality. He was an ascended being and wants all of us to reach our potentials but didn't mean for us to worship him, just follow his path and remember to love one another.

They Walked with Jesus.

I found this book fascinating. I started with Dolores Cannon's later books, which cover a lot of material that is difficult for me to relate to--very esoteric, beyond my day-to-day experience--although very interesting. I am actually finding her books about past Earth lives more compelling, because there is something to which I can directly relate. I read "Jesus and the Essenes" and "They Walked with Jesus" over a couple of days--not necessarily just in that order, or without jumping from one to the other, as I tend to do. So much of this resonated with me. I had long rejected the stories of Jesus that were taught to me in my childhood. I couldn't accept that he was a "God" different from the rest of humanity. That didn't make any sense. What was the point of the crucifiction in that case? Why not just wave the magic wand and make everything better? My best--and only--understanding of the crucifiction had come from a Buddhist perspective: that Jesus was a Master who died a horrible death to demonstrate once and for all that nothing we could do could kill the light (the eternal God-spark) within. But Jesus' detractors, those who would destroy this message to maintain control of the rest of humanity, had a quick and easy fix. They would make Jesus a "God", like the Roman gods, virgin birth and everything. That way nobody else could follow his example, because they weren't as powerful as he was--after all, he was the ONLY son of God. Done and over with. It amazed me how through the centuries people bought this story, willing to give up their own spark-of-God identity, because Jesus was the ONLY son of God. They even attacked people who believed otherwise, just as the Romans and Jewish leaders were willing to attack Jesus who dared to suggest that everyone had the power within. These "Christians" could just go on in their selfish ways, and as long as they claimed to be followers of Jesus, he would save them in the end and lift them up into Heaven, destroying everybody else with his mighty sword. Now, finally, a first-hand view of the life of Jesus that makes sense, that holds together. Thank you, Dolores, for your willingness to carve your own professional path and bring us these fascinating life histories. What a boon to mankind.

Pure Passion

If you've never truly fallen for Him in His purest form, read these life-affirming accounts of those who knew Him during his short time on Earth. I found this book in a used bookstore when I felt a great need for a pure love to enter my entire being... "He restoreth your soul." Believe it!! I fell for Him so hard and so fast that I immediately wanted to shout from rooftops that "He lives!" I continue to purchase more copies from Amazon to give to friends and family, encouraging them to seek Him to find their own peace. Thank you, Delores Cannon, for your brave and wonder-inspired work. It truly transformed my soul!

no I picked the most boring book ever

When I went downstairs to the library to look for a book I thought I was going to pick an interesting book. But, no I picked the most boring book ever. At first it interested me because Chelsea Spain the main character and her friends and her brother were cool but then I just wanted it to get to the point. I mean like Chelsea’s friend Athena got kidnapped and this guy named Harry saved her that’s chill but I just wanted it to get to the point of the book.
The whole point of the book is she takes a risk and then her father all of a sudden like gets in an accident and Chelsea's whole world changes and she knows she's been acting badly as a teenager. As I was reading it felt like the author just kept stalling and I was about to just skip the whole book and get to the end. That's how bored I was. Don't waste your time or money on this book because to be honest I would rather read a whole thesaurus than read this book again.

Must-read for UK gamers

Worthwhile reading for any gamer interested in the history of the medium. As someone who's never played anything older than the AMIGA, I get the feeling that the author does get a bit starry-eyed at times, but his acerbic wit and encyclopedic knowledge more than make up for it. And really, where else will you read about a time where mainstream game studios released games where babies die by the hundreds in an ill-staffed Thatcher era NHS nursery, or you're an alcoholic cleaning lady sippin' on the cooking sherry? It must have been a wild time to be a gamer in 80s Britain, and SPECCY NATION is a sugar rush style whirl through that crazy era. Or maybe it's just the cooking sherry I've been nipping.

Like an exhibit catalog of worlds lost and/or forgotten

The cover of this book is perfect, suggesting images on the wall of some gallery somewhere. Page after page, you're introduced to the complex and entirely-less-than-complex stories behind the games of the ZX Spectrum. What really makes this book stand out is the attention paid to the evolution of story and game play from one game to the next. An idea is tried out once, doesn't completely work, but then moves on to the next where it's more fully realized. Also, Whitehead brings in the real world influences on these games, showing how each is emblematic of a moment in the culture at large. Only a few pages into "Speccy Nation" and the author has refuted American film critic Roger Ebert's assertion that "video games are not art." Well done!

Didn't think i was getting this...

I thought that this book was a history of the ZX Spectrum platform. Rather, the book was more or less a showcase of the most popular and well known games of the ZX Era. Granted, some of the passages made me interested about the games that were talked about. I should have gotten the sample to get a feel what this book was like. If you want to read about ZX games, then this is the book for you, but if you wish to learn about the conception and the history of the ZX Spectrum platform, you'd be better looking somewhere else.

Great advice for dad's and even for mom's

This is a great book every father who has a daughther should read. My pediatrician recommended it to me and I'm so thankful since it contains great advice for fathers. Meg Meeker has a great way of expressing her point by combining her thoughts as a professional and combining it with very interesting stories of cases that support her views. I totally recommend this book for any father who would like to leave maybe the most important impression in a daugther's life. Even if you don't intend to, as a father you are making a mark in her that will last forever. So, you'd better make sure it is the right one. This book brings lots of very practical ideas for you to put in practice with your precious daugther. Just read it and you'll confirm it.

new pathways in etymological study

Scholarly, substantive, and engaging as it is, Liberman's dictionary in his own words is "written to test the chosen approach to the new dictionary" he has put together. The dictionary is intended to be a model for future etymological exploration and study. Most importantly for the field, it introduces but mostly exemplifies a new approach to the investigation of word origins and deciding on the right root for a word, when this can be done with a reasonable degree of assurance. As Liberman states and demonstrates with his analyses of 55 words, the large majority common, "tracing word origins is a game of probabilities" in which the "centrifugal principle" should be favored when it comes to assigning a word's cognate. This principle is explained, "All conditions being equal, tracing a word to a native root should be preferred to declaring it a borrowing. In similar fashion, it is more attractive to refer to an ascertainable foreign source than to an unidentifiable substrate."

Liberman is a professor of Germanic philology at the U. of Minnesota and author of many books and articles on etymology and language. Most of the 55 words he has chosen for this first book of a planned series are simple words. Among these are bird, drab, ever, dwarf, gawk, key, lass, man, pimp, toad, and witch. Nearly every word is traced to a root word among the northern European family of languages, the basis for Anglo-Saxon and modern English. The word "jeep" is an obvious exception. A few of the words are controversial four-letter or gender terms.

While the author's "centrifugal principle" sets relevant limitations and preferences for deciding on the root of a particular word, the etymological practice demonstrated in his analysis of the more than 50 words is complex and depends on much scholarly knowledge. In these analyses, Liberman does not simply follow a line of apparent related words to a root word, as seen in most dictionaries, including even the esteemed multi-volume Oxford English Dictionary. For Liberman's search for the most probable root entails assessing other respected etymologists' research and conclusions, comparing similar words or possible cognates from several languages, and arguing for why the particular root identified is preferable. In other words, Liberman goes well beyond simply denoting a word root. He aims not only to clarify etymology where able, but to unearth its complexity where called for both to correct errors and assumptions regarding particular words and improve etymological methodology and research.

Not a textbook, pages will lie flat, thankfully

This book covers the basic western classical music repertoire. If you want more, see ya.... Many Dorling Kindersley books are classy looking, that is, they are lavishly illustrated on glossy paper in a handsome binding. But the publishers put as much effort into readability and contents. The presentation is by composer with the essential biographical facts with a timeline, sometimes an evaluation and sometimes short descriptions of the music; for example Puccini's Madama Butterfly is described act by act in about 200 words and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is about the same length. There are plenty of attractive illustrations large and small that blend into the text.

Although there are no recordings recommended, the key compositions of each composer are listed with short notes. The write up on J. S. Bach is 6 pages with 8 music recommendations; for Mozart 4 pages and 9, for Beethoven 4 and 7, for Haydn 3 and 5 and for Shostakovich 4 and 6 respectively. The write-ups are shorter and the recommendations fewer for composers not ranked as high; for example Milhaud and Dukas. There is a chapter on the composers of the romantic opera such as Verdi, Puccini and Wagner. The chapter on modern music includes many contemporary composers omitted in other books, such as Judith Weir, George Benjamin and Magnus Lindberg.

I should add a note of caution. A key composition is not always the same as the popular choice, for example, Bruch's Scottish Fantasy has always been a crowd favorite but is unlisted. But where does one draw the line? This is, nevertheless, a handsome book with durable binding and should serve as a go to source for the nontechnical music listener.

A Desk Drawer Definite for ANY Music Lover

There is not a book I've gone to more over the past 5-6 years than this one (including its predecessor editions). And, I'm not kidding when I say I'm not qualifying that bold statement with "in learning about classical music." It is hard to imagine a guide could compact all the "stuff" into one small book and manage to splendidly display the "aura" surrounding classical music through the centuries. For example, each period has an intro sparsely decorated with art work from the time, followed by a portrait (in words of educated music appreciation and in arts) of the composer(s) most influencing the period or who have passed the test of time, then discussions of pieces for which each composer is best known (either popularly or critically), and then covers a brief sketch and piece(s) for the lesser known, but as or nearly as appreciated, composers with their career "milestones."

I bought this book originally to hopefully pick out some music for working and maybe learn a bit about those responsible for the music to which I listen. I have learned so much more because the book is so user-friendly and pleasing to look at and easy for quick referencing.

If you keep this in your desk at work and pull it out from time to time when you hear a piece of music you like or want to read about a particular composer or piece you're considering, you may well wear the book out as I have with mine.

I really liked this book. The design is awsome, it contains lots of nice illustrations and the informations is good. I liked the idea of a piano cover. It covers some western classical music history. It is a basic book, very interesting and fun to read.

A Taco Extravaganza!

Miller is an astute student of food and culture, witness his other cookbooks which so involve the anthropology of a region and its marriage with its cuisine, e.g. his Red Sage cookbook and my review here on amazon.

His intro to this work is fascinating and taco inspiring, e.g. "This food was alive, colorful, aromatic, tasty, crunchy, juicy, flavorful--as if I had crossed a new frontier of food experience." So his time in Mexico as child in summers and as continuing visitor and taco sampler as adult has inspired this very cookbook. His stated purpose is to excite the user of the cookbook about Mexico's street food, that they are as he states: "fast, fresh, economical and easy, a good match to the rapid pace of our modern lifestyle."

He thus provides authentic favorites from Mexico as well as adaptations such as Lobster and Avocado, as well as Chicken with Apples and Goat Cheese.

With each recipe there is suggestion for type of tortilla, accompaniment, usually a salsa, and a drink recommendation. I find this useful as well as on some recipes where difficult ingredients could be an issue, he provides alternatives, e.g. one of the wonderful few that I have made out of here so far, Baja-Style Tempura Fish, the recipe calls for shark, but he also mentions that mahi mahi or tilapia work as well. These are truly recipes to get excited and involved with new and exciting tacos, salsa, accompaniments to have fun making and serving. His idea of a taco party sounds mucho fun!

Well done with color photos and excellent directions and glossary of techniques, equipment, ingredients and sources for likes of bison, elk, chiles, etc.

Love this cookbook!

All the recipes I've tried so far are wonderful and very authentic. This cookbook is not for a beginner cook, though. Be prepared to spend some time with these recipes, but they are sooo worth it.

Tacos offers great detail and breadth of recipes

I've picked up other cookbooks devoted to a single food like The New Lasagna Cookbook: A Crowd-Pleasing Collection of Recipes from Around the World for the Perfect One-Dish Meal and Biscottiand they can sometimes feel like they just bring together the standard recipes you've seen elsewhere or include a lot of filler to round out the book. Tacos by Mark Miller is the exact opposite.

What I love about this book is that it's the perfect marriage of detail and great recipes. Miller gives you everything you need to succeed, especially when it comes to making homemade tortillas. I really loved the depth of the directions and it reminded me a lot of cookbooks by Rick Bayless.

The recipes are what really get me excited. There is such a breadth covered in this book. It was a perfect balance of more traditional recipes I would hope would be included and unique or fushion recipes that brought me new taco ideas I hadn't thought of. I'm especially captivated by the Braised Beef Short Rib Tacos, Baja Style Tempura Fish, Thai Shrimp, and especially the Chicken with Apple and Goat Cheese Taco. There are also many great photos within the book to give you an idea of what the finished recipe will look like.

I especially like that the cookbook clearly indicates not only how long each recipe will take to complete, but also the heat level. It's great because it makes it easy to adjust if you typically do not like spicy food or find your food is not spicy enough. It's worth noting that most of the recipes take an hour or more to prepare so this is definitely not a quick cookbook. However, I did find the skill level required to be reasonable. Yes, some of the recipes call for cooking meats that are not standard in the American diet, but other than that there are no techniques I saw that would be above the average home cook. The level was consistent with most average cookbooks I have used and magazines like Martha Stewart and Cooking Light.

Overall I think this book is fanastic and am excited ay all my taco making possibilities.
