A fascinating read

I've read this book from cover to cover and I guarantee you it is a fascinating (and at times almost unbelievable) read. I knew some of the studies covered but not in this detail. It's a great idea for a book. The more you find out about these stories the more you appreciate how amazing human behaviour is. I loved the story of railway worker Phineas Gage who had a 6ft metal pole blown through his head and lived to tell the tale travelling around carrying the pole for the rest of his life (he was even buried with it!) and the shocking story of David Reimer who due to botched surgery as a child had his penis cut off and was brought up as a girl before once again adopting a male role in his teens. Each chapter in the book deals with a different case study and they are all very interesting. The psychological importance and relevance of each case is also dealt with. I'd certainly recommend this book - you'll enjoy many of the stories and learn more about psychology and human behaviour in an entertaining way.

About the Author
Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighbourhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighbourhoods and people’s jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he eventually received a BA in sociology.“Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied, and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised.” This fascination led him to obtain his MA and PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his master’s thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain.Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology and now teaches at DePaul University in Chicago. In 2004 he was named to the Vincent DePaul professorship in recognition of his undergraduate teaching and scholarship. He has taught introductory sociology for over 35 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer’s love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. “I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing.”Dr. Schaefer is author of the eleventh edition of Sociology (McGraw-Hill, 2008) and of the fourth edition of Sociology Matters (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups, now in its eleventh edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, fifth edition. Together with William Zellner, he co-authored the eighth edition of Extraordinary Groups, published by Worth in 2007. Dr. Schaefer served as the general editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society, published by Sage in 2008. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest SociologicalSociety in 1994–1995.Dr. Schaefer’s advice to students is to “look at the material and make connections to your own life and experiences. Sociology will make you a more attentive observer of how people in groups interact and function. It will also make you more aware of people’s different needs and interests―and perhaps more ready to work for the common good, while still recognizing the individuality of each person.”

Received in good condition; wrapped well.

Seller sent it in a reasonable time & it was wrapped well. As for the actual contents of the book (Sociology), I haven't really read it-just skimmed it to get an idea of what the layout of the book is like. Thankfully, it's an online class & I don't have homework every night to do (just prep for tests every Thursday, "open book, of course," according to our instructor, lol!). I do think this will be an interesting subject (I like Psych & I did take Sociology in high school; plus, I do wonder why people are the way they are, & maybe this course will give me answers).

I am reading this book as required for class & I am finding this book to be highly informative! I am finding certain aspects of sociology that are fitting to myself & others I know. Even if a person is not in a Sociology class & is looking for something educational to read (yes, people read sociology & psych books for fun!), this is a book I would highly recommend!

Easy to understand, shows real world application of theories

Had to purchase this book for a class, appreciated that it was pretty easy to read and there was consistent examples of real-world situations and applications that went a long way towards understanding the concepts and theories presented. On a personal note, the attitude of the author/contributor about some specific topics came through loud and clear and I found that very annoying, mainly because I had an opposing view, but also because this is a textbook and I don't feel the author's personal opinion should factor in. Overall, it was a useful tool and I got a lot out of it.

About the Author
Philippe Sands is an international lawyer, professor at University College London, and a practicing barrister. Sands has been involved in many of the recent high profile cases in the World Court and elsewhere, including representing the interests of the British detainees at Guant�namo and the efforts to extradite Augusto Pinochet to Spain. He has written for the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, taught at NYU and Boston College, and appears regularly on CNN and the BBC.

Deeply disturbing

Phillippe Sands "Lawless World" is a deeply disturbing book for anyone who shares my belief that America lives by the rules.

It is indeed a "whistle-blowing" account of just how many rules of international law the Bush administration, with the complicity of Tony Blair of Great Britain, flouted in the run-up to and execution of the Iraq war. For someone like me who previously knew next to nothing about the body of international law that exists, it is incredibly eye-opening.
From the Geneva Convention and its protocols, to the Convention against Torture (1984), and the Charter of the United Nations, Sands reveals in plain and readily understandable language just what this body of law contains, how it got there, and how and why the Iraq war violated so much of it.

I have been accused of being an idealist and a liberal. (Which makes me doubly tainted). If I am an idealist, it is because I grew up in a time and in a place where I cut my teeth on the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights. I grew up believing the U.S. was a country of ideals, rules, a code of ethics and fundamental decency, that we had a system of checks and balances that prevented any one arm of the government from becoming too powerful, and that this government governed with the consent of the governed.

When laws, whether domestic or international, are flouted without demur, as they have been by this administration, we are all of us, each and every one of us, at risk. To quote Sands, "what you take away from others you take away also from yourself."

I would recommend the book to anyone with even a remote interest in what went on both before and during the Iraq war regarding the body of law that existed internationally from the end of W.W.II. International law is the only thing now standing between the civilized world and barbarism. Greater adherence to it by all the nations and peoples of the world could make obsolete Wordworth's words,
"Have I not reason to lament what man has made of man"

Phillip Sand's Lawless World

Sands is a great lecturer on the Bush administration's violations of constitutional law. The book can be a bit heavy, but worth reading if you are researching what all happened behind the scenes and without mention by the news media.

International law, a la carte!

Now that we have the benefit of hindsight( ie since the Bush Administration has begun to fade into history) but even before it, we can see that to quote Phillippe Sands's observation that international laws( or at least those dealing with the rights of prisoners under the Geneva Convention) amongst others may have been damaged ut certainly were not destroyed(despite the best attempts of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Yoo)- they are simply TOO robust to be destroyed, even by a single Administration
What is so sad is the sheer short sightedness-if not self centeredness of Team Bush's outlook. Vis a vis when discussing ways to eviscerate Geneva Convention protections against the ill treatment or torture of POWs, nobody seems to have asked- "hang on, how would we respond if a foreign government treated Americans- whether military personnel or civilians-in such an inhumane fashion?" "Is this even right for common criminals in our own nation's prisons!" The answer I believe would be NO! To quote the late( conservative) US Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter- "there are things that you cannot do to a dog!" In fairness, Sands makes the point that this attempt to"remake" international law and custom to suit the "neo-con" agenda came not from the professional lawyers of State, Justice or Defence but a bunch of political appointees such as Yoo, Gonzalez, Bolton- few if any who have ever seen combat or military service.
(As wags put it, they were more familiar with the air conditioned inside of a think tank as opposed to an Abrams tank)!
All in all, a chilling attempt of one administration's(thankfully failed) attempt to foist a new "legal paradigm" on not just the US but the world!

About the Author
Arnold August holds a Master's degree in political science from McGill University, Montreal. The Montreal-based author, journalist and lecturer is the author of Democracy in Cuba and the 1997-98 Elections (Editorial Jos� Mart�, Havana, 1999). He has also contributed a chapter entitled "Socialism and Elections" to the edited collection Cuban Socialism in a New Century (University Press of Florida, 2004, Contemporary Cuba series edited by JohnKirk).

In 2013, Cuba and Its Neighbours: Democracy in Motion was co-published in English byZed Books (UK) and Fernwood Publishing (Canada), distributed in the U.S. byUniversity of Chicago Press. The countries under consideration are the U.S.,Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Cuba. The common thread is participatory democracy.

In 2015,the Spanish version was published in Cuba by CienciasSociales.

t was also releasedin 2015 in Korean by a progressive South Korean publisher.

Between2007 and 2015, as part of the opposition to ongoing media disinformation on current affairs, he wrote more than 60 articles on Cuba and Latin America (mainly Honduras and Venezuela) and on the U.S. published on many websites around the world, most of them bilingually in English and Spanish.�In the same period, he was interviewed on dozens of alternative radio programs in the U.S. and Canada.

Since 1999, based on his books published in English, he has given conferences and lectures in universities in the U.S.,Canada, Europe, Cuba and Puerto Rico.

He is a member of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA, based in the U.S.), the Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) and the Cuba Research Forum at the University of Nottingham (UK).

Too few in the west knows about Cuba, its system and development. In this most interesting book you get solid and important information needed to understand why revolutionary Cuba is able to stand the agression from US-imperialism. Thank you Arnold August for your groundbreaking book!

Mixed bag of Vance stories, some better than others, but all Vance, so all too good to miss. Vance's strength lies in longer fiction, where he can more fully create his world for us to experience, but I'm glad I read this collection because you can see how he wrote before he found that novels were his venue.

Thanks to those Vance fans who brought us this and other of his formerly lost works.

About the Author
Dr. Iraj Sadegh Amiri received his B. Sc (Applied Physics) from Public University of Urmia, Iran in 2001 and a gold medalist M. Sc. in optics from University Technology Malaysia (UTM), in 2009. He was awarded a PhD degree in photonics in Jan 2014. He has published well over 350 academic publications since the 2012s in optical soliton communications, laser physics, photonics, optics and nanotechnology engineering. Currently he is a senior lecturer in University of Malaysia (UM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

O.A. Akanbi received his B. Sc. (Hons, Information Technology - Software Engineering) from Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University, Malaysia, M. Sc. in Information Security from University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and he is presently a graduate student in Computer Science at Texas Tech University His area of research is in CyberSecurity.

E. Fazeldehkordi received her Associate’s Degree in Computer Hardware from the University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, B.
